Description Some 30 drawings commissioned for an upcoming documentary about evolution. From left to right and top to bottom: ADN, proto-cell, prokaryote cell (bacteria), Eukaryote cell (flagellate), colonial protozoans (planula), Kimberella (possibly the oldest known Bilaterian from the fossil record), a Vetucolian (enigmatic animal that could have been basal deuterostomian), Haikouichthys (one of the earliest vertebrate), Arandaspis (one of the earliest jawless fish), Guiyu (the earliest known bony fish), Psarolepis (a basal Sarcopterygian), Panderichthys (another sarcopterygian close to the ancestry of the tetrapods), Tiktaalik (the famous fishapod), Acanthostega (early tetrapod), Ichthyostega (another early tetrapod), Hylonomus (the earliest known amniote), Ophiacodon (a basal synapsid), Biarmosuchus (a basal therapsid), Thrinaxodon (a cynodont), Adelobasileus (the earliest known mammaliaform), Eomaia (the earliest known Placental), Purgatorius (a basal plesiadapiform, once thought to be a mesozoic primate), Plesiadapis (a plesiadapiform), Aegyptopithecus (an early haplorhine), Proconsul (an early hominoid), Ardipithecus ramidus (an early Hominini), Australopithecus afarensis, Homo habilis, Homo erectus and Homo sapiens.

The extinct forms are puzzlers, as we can not revive them, let alone grow them in the labs.

So...30 pictures is worth 30,000 words!  Very helpful.  I assume this is a collage including artwork of several artists (Arthur Weasley is credited with the drawing of Purgatorius on Wikimedia)?  Why do you say that Purgatorius was once thought to be a Mesozoic primate...has this changed?  Funny how the previous commenters about sex only mentioned the hominids, Ha!

Amazing how we descended from these guys I think our ancestors were chimps and gorillas maybe they were mixed together as a hybrid to make us if u scan a chimps brain it's half the size of a human brain

NTamura In reply to KaijuMaster107 [2015-07-21 02:57:48 +0000 UTC]

Well no, our ancestors weren't chimps or gorillas but chimps, gorillas and humans share a common ancestor...

So does this mean we still don't know about our ancestors yet?

Roughly we do.
Australopithecus is one of our ancestors.

Yes, you are correct. I am just taking here an old view when Hylonomus was the oldest known amniote.

Its an interesting scenario I think, but what about if our Human ancestors were less-chimp like in the way they physically appeared and more Gorilla like. What if our ancestors resembled and were closer to Gorillas than Chimps? How would we physically look? How much of a difference you would think be there?

Beautiful! I love the choice of 'ancestry', its great to see evolution described without archaeopteryx involved somewhere XD Although I know its for humans, but you would be surprised where that little fella turns up! May I ask what documentary this was commissioned for, I'm interested?

Ugh its a bit chavenistic for my liking, (cuz out of all the diverse/intresting tetrapod linages the "line" can branch off to after tiktaalik from sinornithosaurus to gorgonopsids to pantodonts to thoosuchids to huayangosaurids to burnetiamorphs to Labidosaurus to probainognathians to cetiosaurids to dissorophoids to phorusrhacids to nanchangosauridae to aïstopods to rhamphorhynchids to climacoceratids to adelospondyli to oligobuninae (c wat i did there lol? )) it went to those particular cliche examp. to umbrella-tize the idea of evolu., but the piece is still neat to! I like the part of the Kimberella illustration!

Interesting although in reality the Homo sp. males would be far more likely to carry the spears.

Fascinating piece! But if I'm not mistaken, isn't the Human Lineage H. Habilis, Eregaster , then Heildbergensis? Granted with some of the older specimens offshoots would have to stand in for actual ancestors.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NTamura In reply to skyvalr [2013-04-29 20:18:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think it is the current view nowadays: H. habilis -> H. ergaster -> H. heidelbergensis -> H. sapiens...

I'm doing something just like this, although I'm trying to include every life form that either is a direct ancestor of homo sapiens or is a direct offshoot of the lineage.

Paleohyperspace In reply to NTamura [2012-05-17 17:40:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yeah, I'm finding that out for myself. I'm still on the first rough draft (I plan to make at least three before the final version) and I'm only up to the Jurassic. And then there's the added complication of learning about creatures from earlier periods that I didn't know about when I started.
