Good question an a bit of a fuzzy area depending on what you mean by bases and pixel art?

Sure! You can see examples in my gallery under "dolls" and "bases" - also generally "dolling" is a form of pixel art where an artist will make a bald/naked template that can then be customized by anyone (with clothes, hair, etc.). Mine are always free and open to anyone to edit, and cannot be sold in any form, so no money would be made off this. So when an artist uses a stock image to make a base (with the stock artist's permission obv) they trace the outline of the pose and use it for their base or pixel art. So in my case, I would like to trace the basic pose with one color pixel lines, convert the image so that it's blank lineart, and do whatever shading and detailing on that lineart myself. Let me know if that's okay, or if you have other questions - I can show you an example on another artist's stock that I'm working on right now if you'd like. Thx!

Thankyou for the in depth reply, I had not realised bases and dolls were so much of a thing .
After thinking about this all night I have to say I am not 100% with the idea of my stock as bases.
It's nothing personal and actually the first time anyone has asked to make a base from my stock.

Okay, I totally understand. If you need help putting that in your use policy or something, let me know; I don't know of a similar stock policy off the top of my head you can copy from, but depending on what you want to do, you could just add to your policy something like "do not trace" etc. Thanks for the consideration! I do appreciate it.

Hello,
I read through your stock rules a few times and I am still a little unclear about something (you've probably answered this a bunch of times before). I'm an illustrator and for client projects/commissions I usually take my own photo-reference to avoid having more people involved. However, for my personal work I don't always take the time to hire a model/lighting/etc... so I like to use stock photos for reference for my drawings and paintings. Sometimes I sell prints of my work (sporadically at the moment) and I hope to take prints to conventions next year to see how they actually would sell to the public. Is this under the "blanket fee" you mentioned? Would I pay the amount to you and then would be able to freely sell prints?
I hope this wasn't confusing. I don't have anything in particular planned to paint, but I do like your stocks.
Thanks!

In short yes you are correct (I should probably try and re write it some time soon ).
To elaborate I count it as two worlds, the artist doing personal work/prints/commissions for individuals. (I.E. the final piece is the final item)
That's all cool under the "Blanket Fee".
The other half is if the work is for a second purpose (advertising/book cover and so on), it has only happened once to date but if the 3rd party is re-selling the work it needs it be discussed on a project to project basis.
I hope that makes it clearer.
You have some very interesting work (looking at the sins).
And if I might say, your ID, that is one hell of a stare .

Ah, wow! Thank you for such a clear explanation! I like the blanket fee idea, it seems very fair for personal use of good quality stock.
I'm also happy you like my work! Thanks for taking the time to check out my gallery
I hope my stare didn't pierce ya too much

I just want to make sure you don't have a rule about combining stocks. Can I use different pieces from different stocks (all from you) in one image? (I'll reference each stock, if you'd like. I just can't find any one stock that has all the aspects I want, so I am making sure I can edit them. I am planning to use them as a drawing reference)

yes you are welcome to do that (you would not be the first actually).

Hi! Ehm.... Sory, my english isn't really good, so I haven't understood perfectly your journal :'D
Just to make sure, what if I use some of your stock as reference for a comission? Just the pose, of course. Do I still have to pay a fee? That's the only part I didn't had really clear, sorry :'D

That's fine I don't know any Spanish so you are already winning .
As you would still be using my stock and I post the majority of my stock as pose reference I do still consider it a use.
So yes if you were planning to use it for paid/commission work I would as a very small fee for using the stock.

Hey Kyle, I had a quick couple of questions regarding the £20 commercial use "blanket fee" (which is approximately $35USD at the time I'm writing this for anyone who needs the conversion). The £20 is a "pay once for any commercial use of your stock from the date payment is received" deal, am I reading that correctly? Also, does this "£20 commercial use blanket fee" include book covers? If not, do you have a fee for that or are you not going to allow book covers? I can see your patient, axe man, and chainsaw man making for great horror/thriller book covers and I would love to make some premade covers available for self-published authors if you allow that. I'm more than happy to pay the fee too if that covers it.

Null-Entity In reply to CaseyBelle [2014-07-04 12:07:20 +0000 UTC]
And damn you raise a good few questions I have not thought about .
Mostly the use of my stock in a work that is then sold on again/edited and applied to another work.
I was only thinking of items that go off as a finished item (Prints/Posters/Commissions for pieces).
The question in my mind is actually one of control and my stock rules, I have been asked regarding book covers before and ask for an overview of the story/character I may be representing.....
And again notification/my being informed of the book covers use...Hmmm..
Damned difficult to balance..
I think the updates I just put in are the best middle ground I can think of.

CaseyBelle In reply to Null-Entity [2014-07-06 02:18:28 +0000 UTC]
Oops, sorry to put you through this Kyle! Better you get this sort of situation sorted out now though and not when an artist is on a very tight deadline and you had not considered it yet!
So far I only intend to design covers for eBooks. If a print book cover opportunity comes my way then I will consider it and then choose whomever's stock fits the story synopsis best, contact the provider (unless I already have worked out cover deals beforehand) and go from there.
I will never take on any covers that are of a questionable nature such as child, or animal abuse (unless it is anti-abuse), fetish/sexual/erotica regardless if it is of a heterosexual or homosexual nature, and especially not rape having been a victim survivor of that myself.
A simple romance novel should not be an issue with most people, however, but the only stock of yours (so far, at least) that would fit that genre is your collaborative stock with Claire and I would definitely ask her about that prior to using those images as covers. (I'm referring to your "costumed stock," not pose references as I know you collaborated with EntombedSix as well.)
What I would like to do is create some book covers with no particular story in mind, but covers that would fit in with the suspense/horror/thriller genres. I would post them with full credits to my deviantART gallery here, my website (once I finish the damn thing), Facebook , and Shadowness , credit and notify you, and then promote them to self-published authors whose works are along the lines of Dean Koontz, Stephen King, John Grisham, James Patterson, etc... Once one of the covers sells and I customize the title/author name I would then let you know the book info and once it is on bookshelves (virtual bookshelves that it ) I would give you the URL where you can find and/or buy a copy if you choose.
As a stock provider myself, DamselStock , and as someone with a law degree I always put the stock providers first as I know what it is like first hand. So, if I've read your updates correctly you are okay with eBook covers with the fee being paid and you are notified, etc...? If so, I will definitely send you £20, no problem at all there, though it might be next month as I just had to buy a new microphone for my computer so that I can start making some tutorials. I will not make any covers until I have paid you.
So, please let me know if that sounds okay and if I am interpreting your updates correctly.

Haha it's almost a shame my reply is so short compared to what you just wrote.
But yes now without a time scale is a big help .
You nailed it, on the themes and use, that's a very admirable and dedicated stance on the crediting and notification.
All of that sounds spot on and I am more than happy with that arrangement.
Yes to the E-books as long as they avoid the mentioned themes, all under the blanket fee.
I'm not going anywhere so no worry about as and when as you almost single-handedly poked the holes in my wording .
Sadly as I have grown up I have dated and come to understand there are more "survivors" out there than I ever thought possible.
Good luck with the tutorials .
Talk to you soon.

I know this sounds like a really weird question, but i am currently using your stock as a reference for one of the drawings i am currently doing, it may or may not be finished just depends on time >.<
But the question is am i allowed to use your stock but be it on a different gendered character/person?
I majorly draw females, but your gallery in general is amazing and i would love to use them anyways >.<
If this has already been answered/asked i am sorry, i just don't wanna get my information wrong!

Hi there,
I have some additional questions if you won´t mind.
I was wondering do you happen to sell your stock for points too? In case you don´t, given that I´m from Spain, would you accept euros? And it would be possible to buy from you one single stock, like, for instance, this one? null-entity.deviantart.com/art…

I've been doing some anatomy drawings as of late in various mediums, my trusty old volumes are sufficient for this purpose alone, however the poses offered are at times very traditional in dynamicism. I enjoy unique, situational poses that would otherwise not be existent in a traditional study of the human figure, that is actually the reason why I placed you on my watch list in the first place (along with a number of other deviants). Within the next month I expect to use some of your stock.

Heyo~! Some of your stock is awesome, really cool poses that I'd love to use.
But I do have a question. I read through the rules, and you'd like to have a link to all the places that the drawings are posted up on. I'd be posting the drawings up on dA, of course, and the only other place I'd be posting to is a site called y!gallery (a site like deviantART but caters to male homosexual material) and my account is not visible to anyone who does not have an account on there (and I refuse to change that setting), so .....I don't think I'd be able to link you to that posting. I wont put it up on that site if you'd prefer not to of course, but since that site is for, basically, everything and anything male Id really want to post it. Especially if Im proud of the drawing and I know it'll get good attention/appreciation on there.
Now I know this sounds off-putting, but I wouldn't use your stock for anything pornographic, and any drawings I do will be posted up on both sites. With the same links back to you, etc etc.
tl;dr: just wondering if you'd have a problem with me posting up to a site that I can't exactly link you to.

Thankyou very much for the kind words.
I think it boils down to two/three things really.
The context/nature of the picture and what is implied (my duo stock has been draw as couples
in mid sex (with nothing on show) and as guys holding one another before, so I would like to
confirm the intended picture.
So in short what makes it Homosexual without being pornographic to go on that site ?
And if it were to be posted on that site I simply as you link back to my DA page, even if I cannot review the
page myself.
Kyle.
P.S. a note might be a better place to discuss this.

"Inappropriate" gives me a little control if someone creates something really OTT, so unless it's me chewing my way though a woman's guts and rubbing them all over myself.. I really doubt I will have an issue, if you want to show me a work in progress sketch when you get there for my two cents then that's fine.
