Description
I'm still not 100% on the title. I'm sure I wrote down a better one somewhere but can't find it...The promise refers to two promises- She was promised to the gods and she was promised that she would be looked after... The gods were a proxy for an ancient social system, and specifically the temple where the goddess she was 'dedicated' to was worshiped, and her safety was conditional on her selling her body from puberty onwards...
Destroyed- Her future, her faith in humanity and the gods, her body...
The Goddess as an abused child, who would have starved if her abusers hadn't taken her in...
Her face is broken, but she still has a time-defying permanance...
Lots of thoughts went into the making of this one... I could write an essay (and tried to get some of it down here: [link] )
Detail of the face: [link]
Its 112 x 116 cm, on plywood...
The figure/statue is mostly acrylic, and the background mostly collage n acrylic, but with all sorts of other stuff too...
I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this piece...

Yet she is bound to her current state of life. The sad part is that she can't (in most cases) do anything about herself, yet she struggels on like a warrior to the bitter end.
You've outdone yourself with this. I see you added the earth aswell up to the left.
I can tell you have put alot of emotion and thoughts behind this. I want to say more about it but i can't explain myself, it just flows through like a blanket of thoughts.

The thing is, the people who enforce her 'devotion' were once in her position themselves, and have become hardened to it... and she may well end up imposing the same life on another... But this part of it (the story of theis aspect of the character) is the result of a documentary I was watching just before I started this... and so is the most coherent aspect of its meaning... and not necessarily the most important...
Trying to explain it myself I feel that (blanket of thoughts)... A lot of it is emotion and implicit, rather than coherent 'thoughts'...
