Description

clay - ~12" long. FINISHED

Work based on work by *Onlynude .  This isn't strictly sculpted from one photo, but used several to try to capture the heart of her work.  (Yeah, it's hard to work a 3D piece from a single photo.)  This photo is of the finished piece, from a different angle, and with a different background.

I've appreciated the heart and soul she puts into her photos, especially the ones where she combines multiple photos to create something new.  This piece is dedicated to her.

Thank you!  It's interesting since this piece was largely inspired by a photo (self portrait) by another young artist here who I have had the pleasure of getting to know.  I always enjoy it when one person's work serves as an inspiration or stepping off point for another artist.

I like "Only Nude II" From this angle it looks really nice .. is this the fired version?

Yes, this is finished.  No glaze -- it's just the way the clay fires.  Interesting that it darkened to almost the same color as when it was still moist clay.

Glad you like it!

Blessings!

I do .. i think it looks a lot better from this angle.

Does i t usually become a different color?

Different clays fire to different colors.  Many are white, or red (terracotta).  Clays like this have had other things added to give the more dark color, or to end up with a more glossy finish.  Every different clay has its own personality, and things that it can or cannot do.  I really like this brown, but only have a little of that kind left, and haven't found a source for more of it.  Guess that just means you're extra special, eh?

Yes, I like this angle, and it's quite different from the earlier post.  I seem to be getting more "favs" on this one.  That can be good or bad depending on how you look at it...........

Thanks for using your special clay for this sculpture ..

Is it not possible to create your own color of clay .. with pigments?

And yes i understand that this will get more faves, it's in the spirit of DA ..

You are very welcome...

Somewhat...  There are some pigments you can add, but not many normal pigments will survive the intense heat of firing.  Any kind of normal paint would burn off very quickly at 1,200°C.    Many colorings, such as iron oxides which make red clays, occur naturally, which is why many ancient clays are red.  Most clay bodies aren't colored, because it is easier to start with a neutral white base to build your other colors on.  Personally, I like the darker colored clays because they work better with sculptures than they do with vessels and bowls and such, where the glazes shine in all their glory.

(Any thoughts on the different backdrop?)

I think I would try for a section of the cloth without any of the green pattern showing.  A plain black background might work well, too.

yeah, I was moving the background around a little to look for more open spots, but thought I'd try just a few green lines.  Probably better without them.  Also, trying to find areas without folds and other marks.

Turned out well.  This one is really hard to figure out how to photograph though...  The shot from the back is enough different from the WIP that I thought it was worth adding.
