Description
Terracotta clay, 13" x 18" (finished)This is considerably larger than figures I've been working on up to this point, but trying to push the envelope... and as a result, gave me quite a few technical problems (mostly solved)
One of the interesting challenges with this piece was coming up with a title.
Often, when I begin work on a piece, I will have a picture in my head of the composition and content of the figure, but I don't usually have a title. In most cases, as I work with the figure, the title will become evident to me, sometimes almost as if the figure tells me what its title should be. Sometimes, it's as I photograph the finished piece and start posting it on the Web that the title comes.
With this figure, I could feel the emotion in the figure, as if I was seeing the whole story, but I had a difficult time putting words around it. After a great deal of time spent simply staring at it, the title began to narrow down to "Sunrise". I didn't want to be too prescriptive, narrowing down the observer's interaction with the figure, so I left it at that.

Yeah, definitely happy with how she came together on so many different levels. Brought her to a gallery I am associated with, and the owner immediately wanted to have her in the gallery there. He even cleared off a table near the front of the gallery where she can be on display!

heh... very true!
(I have a corner in my studio dedicated to many of the artists I spent time with in Italy this year. I have some little pieces that they made and I was able to bring home. Every day it reminds me of them and the time we spent together. )

Stunning, Chuck. She seems to have come through the fire unscathed (literally and figuratively). To my eye, one of your very best.
Blessings,
Steve

I will say that a lot of things I've been learning over the past months and years somehow came together in this piece, not just in the anatomy, but the overall pose and composition. I did like the look on her face. There are still some details I'm not happy with, but overall, I think she has a right to her attitude.

(There are some subtle cracks at her wrists, where I literally had to "glue" her back to the base, by painting a layer of clear glaze between her hand/wrist, and where her bottom rests on the base, and then re-fire. The seam between butt and base didn't fuse correctly during the drying period, and I had a huge amount of trouble as her arms shrank faster than the rest of the body because they dried faster. She looks great now... but there's a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this one!!)

There is always a sigh of relief on this end when you post one as "finished".

HA! So very true! Still need a photo of the last "Sheltered" piece. Turned out pretty well, though it has one irksome crack in it.
