After doing some more research on different tree types, I found the the beech tree was not as I thought. In fact, it tends to be a much thicker tree, with very smooth bark. There are often multiple trunks which have grown together. In hard earth, the roots tend to scatter across the surface, intertwining together to create a complex pattern.
