Description Unfired terracotta clay.  24"

Yes, this is close to the largest figure I've done.  Measured, and she'll fit in the kiln with around an inch or so to spare.  (She will shrink a bit during drying, so that will give me a little more leeway.)  Still pondering a better title.

Experimenting with colors.  I added a little ferric oxide to some slip and painted just a bit on her hair.  We'll see how that affects the color as the clay fires.

Different view here: sta.sh/027lfh3hl2s

EDIT: uploaded a slightly better color balanced version

Do you use darker clay in areas?

That is cool, I didn't know that was a thing. They never showed us in pottery class. Well they didn't show us a lot really. I think perhaps because the teacher thought kids were more interested in making bongs to be funny and other disturbing things. But I found that was quite the exception not the rule. Most kids wanted to do more than bowls. I wanted to make statues like yours when I was in high school. I wanted to render angels and fairies.

I have always loved figurative sculpture, whether it's full body, face studies, hands or whatever.  A lot of people do exaggerated or fantasy figures, but not so many doing just plain figures.

And yes, it takes a lot of practice, and the stubbornness to keep trying even when your figures look hopeless.

Thanks! Waiting to build up a few more pieces to fill up the kiln a little more so I can fire this one.

This sculpture is so good that at first glance I thought it was an actual person.

Ha! I must be doing something right then.
Thanks!

(The pose is a little difficult, but it was actually based on a live drawing session, and the reference photos which I took for later use. It is really possible to turn like that. )

In the middle of a firestorm, of people who are completely deaf to anything anyone else is saying.  (It doesn't matter what a thousand other people have said about a work.  If it's suggestive or "skimpy", then it's porn.)

Chuck, I really do love all of your recent work, that you've posted here. My lack of comments is a result of a couple of problems: my stylus has started glitching badly enough to mess with my computer's functioning, so I'm having to relearn how to use a mouse; mouse use makes my hands hurt horribly (yay for age and the usual issues), and my stupid depression has been a lot worse for awhile. I look at your work, "gosh-wow" over it, and the words vanish into that dumb fog as I start to type. *sigh* I can hardly wait to get off that medication. (One more way cancer is more than annoying.)

Observer14 In reply to keight [2017-05-15 02:06:12 +0000 UTC]

Kate, I think it would be unfair to say, "I understand", since I haven't been through what you've seen, but even this comment just makes me smile.   You are a true friend, in spite of the fog and other issues, and your "gosh-wow" still speaks volumes.  Actually, I do understand the words getting all jumbled and fuzzy sometimes, but I can't blame it on medication in my case (aside from the usual ibuprofen for my back).

Hoping and praying for your computer glitches to get ironed out soon, and blessings to you, dear friend.  Keep creating.  I think that's the most true way to add your love to what I'm doing here.

but so difficult to do  . . .

Observer14 In reply to ChIandra4U [2017-05-15 01:57:20 +0000 UTC]

It's actually based (at least somewhat) on an actual pose from my drawing class.   I stuck one of the reference photos in my Sta.sh.  The one difference is that her left shoulder is up a little more off the surface.  I was trying to do that with the clay, but couldn't quite get it to stay that way...
