Description I intentionally tried to blur the left side of the image to enhance the sense of motion. But I can't tell if I was really successful. Either way, stomping through the forest on all fours as a werewolf would be awesome.

So it doesn't seem like Devaintart has the option for non-members to ask for critical reviews of their work?

If you can, please feel free to give me some constructive criticism on this! Thanks.

Eh, dA's official critique thing is bullshit anyway. People have given & received constructive feedback on art before they ever came up with that, and will keep doing so, with or without it.

Anyhow, as for your art -- more than anything else, I'd lighten up their backs a bit. Have some of that moonlight reflect off their backs and generally "outline" their silhouette a bit. Right now it's very dark and they just blend into the background.

Love it.

Could I use thsi for a graphic at my website? It's not a werewolf web site exactly but a site for my roleplaying game characters but one of the active ones is a werewolf and most in my history have been. So I'd like to have a werewolf themed graphic aspect on the site. The site is in Finnish. Credits and link to you would of course be included at the global footer of the site and additionally wherever you'd wish.

Absolutely! As long as credit is given to me somewhere it can be found. Honestly, in my mind, I don't mind simply because I know I can't stop some people. So at least you're asking.

So go and spread the werewolf love. B)

I think my favorite part of this is the background. I love the surreal look it has to it, like an old painting or something.

THe characters in the foreground are great too. The coloring is really rich and vivid. Like *SaxGirl1010 said, the fur pattern really comes off as looking really soft. They eyes are really great too; you can really see the intensity behind them.

The criticism I have to offer is pretty much the same as Saxxy and ~OfficerBadger said. The composition feels kind of cramped, which kind of clashes with the free, fast moving mood of the characters. An expanded canvas with more room would not only have freed up the look of the piece overall, it would've given a good chance to show off that awesome background a bit more. XD

lycanthropeful [2012-02-10 04:28:52 +0000 UTC]

I agree with ~OfficerBadger ; the composition feels a bit cramped, but I commend you for choosing a horizontal canvas.

The thing I like most about this is the richness of the coloring and shading. That auburn wolf in the foreground is simply beautiful, and the fur looks silky and soft without losing the effect of pseudo-realism. As I said with the line art, the hands are amazingly done, and look very strong and fitting for this type of creature. I think this shows that you have come leaps and bounds in your art since returning from your hiatus; this is easily up there or more fun to look at, for me, than many of the big-name werewolf artists' work. So keep at it!

In terms of the crampness, do you think removing the tree silhouette on the bottom right side would open the piece up a bit? It's on its own layer and I could easily remove it and add some more grass in that portion of the piece.

lycanthropeful In reply to OdeeSS [2012-02-10 05:07:17 +0000 UTC]

Try that and see how it works. I also think giving some extra space at the top may help with the overall "breathing room" of the piece. To me, to really get the "cramped"/"seeing them through an extremely small place in the trees" effect, you'd have to bump up the impact of the trees, how much room they take up, and show us less of the wolves.

OdeeSS In reply to lycanthropeful [2012-02-10 04:53:29 +0000 UTC]

Huh! I see where people may think this picture looks cramped, but for some reason I saw it more in a sheltering-hidden-secret-forest kind of way. Lol.

But thank you very much! I'll try to tweak this a little bit over the weekend (blur the grass behind the wolves and try to emphasize the moonlight)

OfficerBadger [2012-02-10 00:46:49 +0000 UTC]

Werewolves running through a moonlit forest, nice imagery. The biggest problem with the painting is the composition. You have these large powerful creatures but it feels so claustrophobic. The trees especially suffer, they look more like bushes because they start branching at their base, and not further up. Extending the canvas up would help with this. It's generally a good idea to give the composition more space on the side the subject's face is looking. I would've also done so with the bottom to give more space and allow for more movement.
I noticed that some of the tree's shadows fall over the werewolves in some places but not in others. It would have been really interesting to explore and expand that further and have the areas where the moonlight can reach brighter. Mostly to up the contrast and put a focus on the two. I've noticed whenever people pay special attention to hard shadows it really puts an 'unf' in their work.
I hoped this helped and yeah, it's odd that only premium members get that 'critical review' feature.

Thankyou!

Much of the changes you suggested I can't really make on this piece. But I will definitely keep it in mind for the future. As for the drop shadows: I know what you mean. Drop shadows add A LOT to a piece but they're something I have only recently been trying to do. However, I can still try and go in and emphasize the moonlight reaching the wolves at certain parts.

But yes! Thanks for the response.

this is really cool OoO i love the shading... the fur texture is just awesomeee~ and yep, it looks like they're in motion to me. the bluring worked x3
and running through a forest as a werewolf would be fun, but i wouldnt wanna be a one.. xD
& i like how there's a subtle touch of human in them... they look more animal than human, but not completely animal either 8D just the way i'd imagine a werewolf.

and everyone that coments on this has a wolf icon lol x3 even me... ._.

This is an interesting work, Outward! I don't know if it's my problem but is quite dark from my point of view. I love the soft strokes of the background and the grass, you can really feel it is at night. Although they're running I think it needs a bit more dynamism.

I like it!

OdeeSS In reply to Licantrox [2012-02-09 22:45:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, a lot of my pictures are turning out more dark than I mean to. So yeah, it's already a dark piece, but it may be even darker on your end.

I think you did a fantastic job on this. I love the atmosphere, and most of all the perspective that you put these two in.

As for the crit, I'm probably echoing the others who have commented, but I would also blur the grass that's underneath the werewolves, as well the trees, seeing that they're running through the forest, so essentially trees would be passing them. The only other thing that catches my eye is the brown wolf's right paw.

Just the angle and large thumb seems a bit off compared to the other one, where their thumb is smaller, but then again, looking at these two, it does seem to be that the brown wolf is bigger than the red, so that could explain why the bigger thumb extension.

Other than that, it looks lovely. c: Keep up the fantastic work!

OdeeSS In reply to IstorMortis [2012-02-09 02:13:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment!

Well, the way I imagined it in my head originally, it made sense to blur the left side of the image and have it get progressively clearing towards the the right. But, now I can see where it would benefit to do some blurring on the right side too. However, I don't want to blur it all.

And the thumb? Yeah, it's kind of weird, but I struggled getting it to look the way it does in the first place.

Once again, thanks!!

You're welcome!

Understandable, I can see how you're thinking when it comes to the motion or movement of this piece. I wasn't sure entirely if you were trying to capture the style you did in this piece, or in some way, wanted as though you were snapping a picture and captured these two in the motion.

But regardless of that, do what you feel is right. c :

Thumbs are a pain :< I have trouble with the hands on my weres and thumbs are the worse thing for me to draw on them as well.

Yeah that fancy critique feature is available only to members with premium accounts. They're mostly just flashiness, anyway. You don't need them to give/receive a good critique and a lot of people who use them don't use them right anyway.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OdeeSS In reply to JZLobo [2012-02-09 02:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, I just remember that once upon a time someone could put "constructive criticism preferred" or something like that for their comments. The whole paying to have the critique thing is ridiculous. lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JZLobo In reply to OdeeSS [2012-02-09 02:14:58 +0000 UTC]

I think they instated it because people were using the comments system less and less seriously. The critiques feature was brought in to try to bring serious reviewing back but it was a failed experiment. I blame the overall community of the site more than I do the people running it.

OdeeSS In reply to JZLobo [2012-02-09 02:17:36 +0000 UTC]

All I did was ask kindly for constructive criticism and I'm getting it, no critique option needed. : )

Honestly, though, even when I had the option to, I never used the critique feature to give critiques. I just write them a long ass comment.

JZLobo In reply to OdeeSS [2012-02-09 02:27:48 +0000 UTC]

Well that's not really much of a surprise, the social circles you submit to are more serious about their craft. And it doesn't hurt to ask for it in the author's commentary, that's for sure.

I've used the critique feature a few times. The extra bells and whistles make it kinda fun.

ahuizotl3 [2012-02-09 01:14:59 +0000 UTC]

For write a critic you need to pay.

I wonder why one have red eyes and the other blue eyes? Also looks the paws with thumbs, left is almost huge like human one, the right one has a wolf thumb like instead.

Good job with the atmosphere on this piece, it really looks like nighttime. As for the blur, I think it works, but I'd blur the grass behind the werewolves, too. Or at least smooth out the detail some. And, of course, the werewolves look great!
