One of the three Gorgons, Medusa was the only one who was mortal. There is a particular myth in which Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden, but who desecrated Athena's temple by lying there with Poseidon. Outraged, Athena turned Medusa's hair into living snakes.The most persistent Medusa myth is of her being beheaded by Perseus.
Medusa is being played by lockstock , while the snakes were collected from all over the 'net, including one from mystiquemoons , and 'ratsnake' from randomjhovall . the background was a freebie from renderosity .

if you're interested, in the first tellings of the medusa story she was unspeakably beautiful, but over time, the storytellers turned her into something uglier and uglier .. and i have no idea why ..

oh ok, that will be a challenge then, but that makes it more interesting. i want to make her a creature, but not because of her ugliness, but because shes sort of cursed by the snake-hair...do you know anything else about her? (i know nothing except she has snakes for hair and ppl turned to stone when they saw her, is that right?)

wow, nice manip. The skin looks really creppy and is a nice idea that the snakes are of differents colors but some of them looks kinda fake, as it them doesn't fit with the pic. Overall is a cool work ^__^

you're right, lockstock wasn't actually wearing the snakes, they were added in. and, actually, they're all real .. but no snakes (or lockstocks) were harmed in the creation of this image ..

Oh, i suposed it but what i meant with "fake" is that some snakes seems that them doesn't fit on the pic but as i said before is a cool work ^__^

the older Greek goddesses got a raw deal when Zeus took over .. when the feminine principle of supreme godhead was usurped by a masculine one .. and the previously worshipped goddesses became the 'consorts' or 'lovers' of Zeus, while those that refused were progressively 'uglified'. Medusa began as an exquisite beauty, but ended up being represented as a petrifying hag (literally).

I think this has come out really, really well. I can't stop looking at it making note of the colours and filters that you've used. It's a very dirty image in the sense of texture and lighting which really adds to the piece. Great choice of snakes and well implemented into the final piece. Nice work indeed

it was mainly dodging and burning, using fairly opaque black and white brushes ..
i had a beautiful cobra as well, but decided not to use it, as it became the main event rather than Medusa herself ... maybe i'll use it next time .

I just had a look through Lockstocks gallery to see the raw version of what you started with so I could get a stronger sense of the process and what you've created....I couldnt find it...
I very much like the darkness around the top of this piece it gives an old masters feel to it as well as a sense of drama...the colours of the snakes are just gorgeous, more drama...The lighting and shadows...well, this was done by a master, wasnt it.

Snakes are so sexy... must be the Slytherin in me. Haha. I love this! Usually people would just make the snakes all green or all brown. I love that they are all different kinds and colors. That is awesome.
