Description Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo, Uhu)
Wildpark Schwarze Berge

This is Bobby. Bobby is a professional bad-ass, performing in raptor air shows once or twice a day. Can we get some applause for Bobby?
Oh, and I'm not completely sure about the photographic category here. Sure, he's trained, but I wouldn't exactly call him domesticated...

Taken with a Canon EOS 1100D, Tamron AF 70-300mm 4-5.6 Di SP VC USD Lens

Wow!   Great capture.

Down for maintenance starting tomorrow.  Stay cool and happy shooting.

Thanks!

Take care in the meantime!

By the way, in case I won't be around for a while, there is a small chance something went wrong with my computer (again!). My new power supply unit just died on me two hours ago, a mere 19 days after I bought it. Seems I'm having a run of bad luck lately.

PSU calculator ... It may not apply where you live but, just in case ... Put in your parts and get watts back

Thanks! The wattage is not the issue, though - I upgraded from a 620 watt PSU to a 700 watt one, which is more than enough to power the components in my computer. Instead I suspect that one of the SATA power cables powering my hard drives got damaged, and that the power supply shuts down to prevent damage; the cables are extremely stiff, and unfortunately my HDDs are mounted sideways with not much space to spare once the computer case is closed. Even worse, it's a non-modular PSU, so I can't just swap the internal power cables. When I bought it, I thought it was modular like the old one. It even says "cable management" on the packaging, and silly as I was I didn't look for "modular" in its type designation... What they mean by that is that four cable ties are included. What a joke!

The shop also refused to swap the PSU for a new one; they did a short test (short as in 5 seconds) and it seems to "run just fine". In order to determine anything more they'd have to examine the whole computer. Which would most likely cost me even more money with no tangible results at all... So I'm gonna try something else instead.

I've ordered some extension power cables that are more flexible; once they arrive I will give it another try, see if it runs smoothly when the cables aren't kinked as much. Hopefully that'll do the trick!

Oh, by the way: I've found these online PSU calculators to be extremely vague. Of all the ones I've tried the suggested power varied somewhere between less than 400 and somewhere around 600 watt. So far I've always been making a rough estimate when buying a PSU and they've always been more than powerful enough.

Oliver:

Yes, years ago I use to do it by hand calculation ... include the cooling fans and future growth.  Now, I just use a calculator like I sent you with worst case component growth and then up it a lot.  Current calculation for a build I am considering with worst case component growth ... with the calculator was 750 watts ...  If I build that one then I am going to buy a 1000 watt one.  Since, I have been doing that it has led to fewer problems for me.  But, I do realize it is a drastic overkill.  The location that I keep the Windows machine for editing is some work to dig it out and put it back.  I try to minimize doing it.
Lazy I know ... just no fun to do it.

In my view ... 5 seconds is not long enough.  Some components would need to be under load for say at least some time so that heating can occur.  Heat can cause problems that do not show up quickly as I am sure you know.  Is there some way that you can swap in another one ... and see what happens with the second one. Then you may say it is probably still the power supply unit (PSU).  I suspect not or you would have already tried this.  The other way might be to disconnect everything but the essential and see what happens and then add back one at a time. But, that would still show that it is the PSU.  Could you temporarily use the PSU from your old machine for testing ?  Oh, sorry, I am sure you know what to do.

You sound like you know what to do ... so I will just wish you success.   When I get some more time ... I will catch up here with the other stuff.

When I smoked the drives long ago now ... it was a power cable or cables with the pins configured wrong.  The new SATA cables make this not so much of a problem ... but, still now  ... I am more careful than I use to be.  Three IDE drives in one instance was painful.

Best of success my friend.  I did shoot some Sunday but, found I had done a dumb thing and had not cut the image stabilization on the lens back on ... so most are soft.  I felt pretty dumb.

Later,
Frank

You know what they say... "There's no kill like overkill."

On a more serious note, though, I don't think 1000 watts is overkill, especially if your calculated 'worst case' scenario amounts to 750 watts. As far as I am aware, the average PSU lifespan is significantly longer if it doesn't operate under a load of more than 70-80% of its maximum wattage for prolonged periods of time. In which case 1000 watts would be spot on!

Yes, having it run for 5 seconds is a bad joke; the guy probably just wanted to get me out of the store ASAP, and give me a reason to come back and bring the whole computer in instead.

Right now I'm back to using my old 620 watt PSU, and have been since the other one acted up. Once my ordered SATA power cable extensions arrive via mail, I will give the new one another try; the more I think about it, the more likely it seems that it was indeed a kinked power cable that caused the emergency shutdown.

Three drives at once? Ouch. That's something you won't forget too easily, I'm sure. The worst I've had happen was an old PSU that malfunctioned in such a spectacular manner sparks came flying out of it. I had meant to switch the computer on and ended up with damage to most internal components instead. Definitely the worst (and most expensive) thing I've had happen to any of my computers, especially on the hardware side of things.

It's easy to forget about image stabilization, especially since we're so used to it nowadays. Unless shooting from a tripod (or any other solid surface) there's usually no need to turn it off, so... Could've happened to me just as well.
Still looking forward to your photos, soft or not!

Thank you! It was quite hard to get the focus anywhere near the bird especially given the weather conditions, but I'm happy this one (almost) hit the mark!
