Description Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?
You build up hope but failure's all you've known.
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go.
-Linkin Park

This piece took forever to finish. I was playing with new coloring styles and each portion took me at least twice the amount of time one comic would have taken me.

And I still have nine or so more of these to do. Gah.

Anyway, I noticed that there weren't many actual fanart pieces from the books. So I took it upon myself to attempt to draw some of my favorite scenes from each of the books.

I left Hiccup in the same design from the movies because in all honestly, I adore his movie self. And he was so fun to draw.

This scene is from Chapters 10-11 when Hiccup (SPOILERS) is exiled from Berk. By his own father, no less! Stoick does give all those exiled one last night before they must leave. And Hiccup has a hard time sleeping at all, understandably.

Quote From Novel:

The thunder crashed all around the boys as they stood, heads bowed, in the rain.
"Pity me, for this is the saddest thing I have ever had to do, to banish my own son," said Stoick sadly.
The crowd murmured sympathetically, applauding the nobility of their Leader.
"A Chief cannot live like other people," said Stoick, looking almost pleadingly at Hiccup. "He has to decide what is for the good of the Tribe."
Suddenly Hiccup was very angry.
"Well, don't expect ME to pity you!" said Hiccup. "What kind of father thinks his stupid Laws are more important than his own son? And what kind of stupid Tribe is this anyway, that it can't just have ordinary people in it?"

Very cool ^^ Although I hate to say I didn't like the book as much as the movie. I just...didn't like the feeling in it. But I like the drawing ^^ And the coloring is wonderful. You're really improving.

well the book was meant for kids just starting to read. i think the age range was targeted at 6-10 year old boys. kind hard to put a lot into books at that age range.

Really? Starting to read? It has to be older than that...my niece is just reaching six and there's no way she could read that book. Eh. Tail-end of the spectrum, definitely.

And yes, it definitely takes a special mind to put that much into a book for that age range ^^

OneWingedMuse In reply to moonymonster [2011-02-26 08:47:37 +0000 UTC]

really? my cousin is the same age and he can read it. well, then again he started learning how to read when he was three.

he and his sister both learned to read really young. startled me, because i was pretty sure i didn't know how to read until i was six.

however their youngest brother is a much slower learner. iunno, maybe that's just them.

but you're right. probably a little too much for a normal six year old. but it's in the independent reader section. which is generally classed with that age group.

i know they sell box sets in barnes and noble.

course... there's like three books that haven't come to the states yet. D: and i have no idea when they will arrive here. they look good too- i wish i could read them.

Argh, that's like how I can't find the rest of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole books outside of the internet...maybe they just aren't sharing... ._.

poor hiccup!!!!

I liked the movie better!!!!!!

OneWingedMuse In reply to Felixia-mew [2010-12-06 22:00:31 +0000 UTC]

there's things in each of them that i like. for example- toothless in the movie was pretty epic. but toothless in the book has his own voice which leads to several amusing moments.

i don't like fishlegs in the movie- but in the book, i do. i also love camicazi- though i can't really decide which i like more, astrid or camicazi. they are both great.

there are things that happen in the book that i love that don't happen in the movie. for instance, i love the book's main antagonist, alvin. but unfortunately he doesn't exist in the movie (...yet). but the movie too has an atmosphere that i adored. i liked how vikings weren't instantly friends with the dragons- in a way the movie made more sense.

all in all, as a whole i enjoy both series.

NIELSPETERDEJONG [2010-12-06 06:30:12 +0000 UTC]

Wait... does this happen in the book? And why?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OneWingedMuse In reply to NIELSPETERDEJONG [2010-12-06 08:22:49 +0000 UTC]

it does.

all vikings of berk are supposed to capture and train a dragon. then on the festival day they perform for the village. but hiccup's dragon toothless is especially disobedient and starts a fight with all the other dragons- causing all the young viking hopefuls to fail their test. failure equals banishment. and even though never has there been a time when all the young vikings have failed, the elders still ordered them banished. hence stoick's announcement and hiccup's anger.

but because the storm was so bad, stoick mercifully gave them one more night. then by morning they would need to leave berk forever.

that's what happened... to the best of my memory. the book series are quite a bit different than the movie. but i still love them both.

Beautiful. What else can I say? I do not know the books well, but you have seamlessly merged movie designs into a book plot to give a very moving scene. I was really touched by this.
