Personality: A laid-back non-confirmist with a love for the simpler things in life, Mathis is a bit of a naturalist and most at home in the countryside or anywhere away from inner city life of which reminds him of a lonely, stiffled childhood. Out of uniform, he tends to be a bit of a Space Case, clueless and generally getting lost in his thoughts or too focused on his tasks to take note of his surroundings. He has a particular disdain for formalities and as such, while courteous and respectful towards his superiors may forget salutes and protocol when needed.
In truth, the man isn't mentally built for war of which he sees no sense in though he knows that the only way possible for him to go back to his old life as a Game Warden is for them to win the war, so that the Pokemon will cease to be kidnapped for military purposes.

Quick to apologize and generally never without a friendly, disarming grin, he makes friends easily with those around him even if his overtly optimistic nature might get on the nerves of others. True to the soldier's coda, he hopes for the best but prepares for the worst.
That said, it will become obvious to those observing him that this smiling, genial facade seems to be a combination of a defense mechanism to cope with his daily life stemming way back from an unhappy childhood where this was all he could do, as well as an offshoot of his hidden desperation for friends; Honey gets more flies than vinegar, and in his case, he finds it hard to separate between what he honestly feels and the mask he wears.
As such, he keeps most of his aggravations of which are many sealed deep inside where it stews slowly and it would be nigh impossible to see him in any sort of a temper tantrum or rage without a powerful trigger.

Anyone he considers a friend can expect unerring loyalty sometimes to the point of blinding stupidity and a strange, dog-like tendency to simply take any verbal or physical abuse one throws at him and come out of it smiling anyway; As someone who hasn't had much close human contact, he holds dear to him what he has and will let what he considers 'trivilaities' pass, as well as turn a blind eye to certain transgressions.
Know this; If you have a friend in him, you will have someone ready to die in your stead for you, someone who will listen to every troubling thing in your mind if you wake him up at three in the morning and someone you can trust to haul your drunk ass from the bar after Happy Hours, tuck you in and have a French breakfast ready for you tommorrow morning while you nurse a bad hangover.

Backstory:
Born not of Johto but a son of Sinnoh instead, Mathis was the middle child out of five siblings (Macaire, Mainard, Marceline and Marianne) the scions of the head of the prestegious Montague clan whose grooming of their offspring to take over the various family bussiness began the day they learned how to count beyond ten and could tells their Ls from their Rs. Rules of the household were strict and stiffling, designed to push them onto their charted road to success......except Mathis was having none of it.
Attempts to train him the ways of the upper class proved to be an excercise in futlity when they couldn't even find him what with his constant exploring of the vast grounds, muddying himself playing with the servants' children and their dog, as well as his complete disdain for formality.
The child, perhaps due to a combination of his own overlooked position as the middle child as well as wanting to be his own person knew from the day he saw his father mistreating a butler and found himself comforting the man afterwards, that this was not the life he wanted for himself.
It wasn't long before his parents treated him as a lost case and began to act as though he didn't exist which in all honesty, was absolutely fine with him as he reached teenagehood and skipped his advanced lessons to take more of an interest in his surroundings--that is to say, the vast forest which surrounded the grounds, a love for which drove him to pursue a path as a Game Warden instead of something related to bussiness.

While his siblings shunned him for being the family black sheep, his youngest sister Marianne was supportive of his pursuits and interests as well being bold enough to pursue her own in dancing, and was the only one asides him to show the servants some common decency--he grew close to her and her alone out of his entire family.....and needless to say that when his father set an arranged marriage for her to another clan as part of a long-standing deal, neither Mathis not Marianne took it very well.
Out of duty however, Marianne agreed to the arrangement and that was the last Mathis saw of her until a year and half later when he was in his twenties and living on his own---she had come to his place with burns to her face, begging her to hide him; Domestic abuse had ruled her life during that time, and her confrontation with her husband during one of his drunk periods had turned nasty before she managed to make a run for it.

To his anger, when asking for his family's help in charging the man, they refused, instead ordering him to hand her back to them so the matter could be dealt with privately, and that she should be returned to her husband as per the deal;

Something Mathis clearly couldn't stand for.

Before either of them could track down the two siblings, they had already boarded the first ship out of Canaclave heading for Johto.

Despite having no documents (of which were held by their family), the people were welcoming and the siblings found no problems in settling into their new home, away from their old life.

He took up a job at a local reservation near Ecruteak City as a Game Warden while she apprenticed under the reknown dancers of city's hall.
The gig paid him enough for them to live rather simply though it gave him more of an invaluable insight to the creatures which roamed the park, Poke'mon whom some viewed with mistrust. Through hands-on experience which involved a lot of bites, scratches and nearly-mauled digits, he learned that they were simply animals looking like all animals to survive one way or another, and could be reasoned with to an extent; When some villagers nearby threatened to lynch a group of Houndoom whom had strayed out of the park to hunt several of their sheep, he taught them to slowly gain the animals' trust by feeding them so they wouldn't kill livestock, and in return would protect them from other marauding creatures in considering the village their 'territory' and humans as beneficiaries as long as they did not harm the flocks.

When war came however, he found himself caught in crossfires as Pokemon whom he watched over vigilantly against poaching were suddenly treated as weapons of war instead of the nuinsance they were once to most of the populace. Local military, upon realizing that Ecruteak's warden had no documents and was an immigrant from an 'enemy' territory, gave him two ultimatums:
I. Give them the power to take what Pokemon they needed froom the reserve for military use, or
II. Be incarcerated and face deportation.

Mathis, knowing they couldn't return to Sinnoh was frced to betray the Pokemon which had come to trust him and watched as the forces emptied the reserve.

Left with no job and overbearing guilt, he came to the conclusion that if the Pokemon who had no bussiness being in a human war were going to serve on the frontlines, then he would honor their trust in him once more by joining them in protecting Johto.
And of course, the money was good.

Leaving Marianne with a young female Nidoran he had hand-trained specifically to guard her, he took his leave to enlist with the Johto Army, and found his.....first mate in the form of a murderous little Buneary who made to maim him first thing out of tis Pokeball.
While not overly fond of the little animal's temperament, he seeks to work things out the best he can with what he has learned as a Game Warden..to hopefully put some rabbit back into the beast who deems more wolf than lapine.

And help win the war. That's important too and all......

NOTES: Higher-ups and Johto heads know that he is originally from Sinnoh, and being the space case that he is, he's never really thought about hiding the fact from anyone and won't deny it if asked---as far as he's concerned, his old home is a lifetime away and now, he fights for Johto and his new life.
Whether this will get him intro trouble down the line remains to be seen.

CURRENTLY:
He has defected from Johto Military. After seeing the treatment of soldiers and civilians at the hand of the officers as well as their loss in Undella followed by Johto’s refusal to help evacuate the families of soldiers who were living in Unova, his respect for the military has dropped to a new low.
As it is, he already has no national loyalty to the region. Having despised the military’s Pokemon training methods from day one, Jane’s speech appeals to him and Katrya’s mental nudging both intrigues and puts him at ease as he is used to such ‘intrusions’ from Nike. After discussing matters, he decides to throw his towel in with the rogues when they promise him protection for his younger sister living in Ecruteak who will from now on be a part of the group. His loyalty to his friends has not changed---he refuses to harm them and will backhand anyone he sees trying to harm them.
His personality has taken on a more mischievous and confident air with a cause to fight by that he finally believes in. Joshua Imala and Ichigo Hitsubaki are his brother-in-arms and he has sworn to protect them as their Big Brother figure.

Despite being Mathis' partner, Nicodeme tends to act more like a feral, rebellious younger brat of a brother he wish he never had but is now siddled with. Nicodeme's idyllic life in the plains of Sinnoh came to a sreeching halt the day men with dogs came to corral the entire warren of Bunearies before separating them into two divisions: Lab Subjects and Sparring Fodder. His younger siblings were shipped off to the first and when he tried to stop them from being taken away and retaliated by nearly gnawing the ankles and fingers off several of the uniformed men, he was beaten within an inch of his life to drive home the concept of 'ownership' not just to him, but to the other hares as well.
Instead of being left for dead or turned into dogfeed however, one of the higher-ups saw some potential in that much fight in an animal supposedly meek and useless and he was shipped off to the training facilities to be drilled in the art of battling.
To bring out the inner beast that came with every animal's primal need to survive, he was not stationed with the more peaceful herbivores, but lumped together with dogs, cats and other carnivorous Pokemon who generally saw him as a walking buffet waiting to happen...until he went to town on their asses and they learned to steer clear of the Mad Rabbit.
Nico's hatred for humans didn't cease when he was given to Mathis as a partner, made rather plain when upon being released from his Pokeball, his first action was to bite off the tips of the rudely surprised man's third and forth fingers.
The sound thrashing that came next was nothing he didn't expect---what wasn't however was when the man made to tend to his wounds personally afterwards and for all the respect he had shown his 'master', that Mathis decided to keep him.

For most part, Nico's relationship with Mathis is still far from ideal---he remains steadfast about disliking humans though he understands his position as Mathis' partner and begrudgingly takes orders from him. Not to mention that dinnertime with Mathis tends to be a much better affair than most, as the man rarely feeds him anything he wouldn't himself eat, and for the bunny is secretively thankful for.
As such, while he may think of Mathis as a dumbass, Mathis is his dumbass goddamnit, and he will shank you if you try anything funny with his personal chef.

While Nico isn't capable of flight, he enjoys getting up and personal with airborne enemies via his ice beam which he uses to form slides, platforms and bridges from plane to plane. He uses Mathis' assigned spade as part of his arsenal and wears a spare parachute during missions.

Unlike Nicodeme, Nike and Mathis have known each other since peaceful times before the war where she was one of the Pokemon inhabiting the reserve he was entrusted to manage. Where most of the Pokemon wanted nothing to do with a human, not even one which was trying to help them, Nike saw him as a creature of interest and approached him despite outcry from her own clan who saw her as an oddball and a danger to herself. To their surprise, a strange friendship blossomed between the young fox and the hairless ape who took to her like a younger sibling. Intelligent, playful,inquisitve and curious to a fault, she saw him as a bastion of learning 'new things' and would aid him in managing the Pokemon through her communication skills in return for him teaching her the ways of humans.
Reading, writing, creative problem-solving, music and dance, all of it the little Abra took upon herself to learn as she realized that there was a far bigger world outside the reserve boundaries, and that this man was her glimpse to that world.

Mathis in turn found himself enthralled by what he saw as a genuine friendly symbiosis between a Pokemon and a human for the first time in his life and took it upon himself to document their activities, treating the Abra as a beloved pet subject; Her name 'Nike' was given to her in honor of her services to him as his 'goddess of victory' when it came to mediating the human-Pokemon problem that often cropped up at the edges of the reserve. As the place had been running low on funds since he came in, he decided to write a research paper on the intelligence of Pokemon to persuade the government to allot money to keep the place from being closed down and gazetted to human construction.
Their response had been favorable....

And then war came.

All the sudden, his many new friends and allies in the reserve had become a commodity to the local military overnight.
Nike, refusing to follow her clan's exodus to safety and opting instead fo stay behind and help her best friend through tough times found herself trapped, caged and treated to the sight of her friend bartering her off to strangers who put them in chains. Her love for humans had turned into a newfound rage instead, and it made her a difficult subject for the military to break in during a time when Pokemon training was very little understood and they were trated like beasts of burden, which she clearly was not. The more she fought, the harsher the punishment until one of the handlers took to scarring her face to teach her a lesson. Her outrage became more subdued after that though the handler himself was myteriously found dead days later after having 'fallen' on his military-issued hunting knife ten times.
Refusing to work with any soldier, she was slated to be put down until researchers spared her life by calling her in as a test subject due to her high degree of inteligence. Their kindness failed to win her over even though she begrudgingly followed their 'tests' through which a better method of training 'sentient' Pokemon through rote tasks and Pavlovian techniques were developed.

During a routine shift from one laboratory to the other, she passed by the station where cadets were to recieve their new Pokemon...

And saw Mathis.

To say she flipped her shit would have been a very kind understatement, and her latent telekinetic powers manifested in nothing short of an explosion as she tore away from her handlers and battery-assaulted the rudely surprised man who found himself a ragdoll being hurled from wall to table to window to comrades to wall again which were starting to gain an unneeded coat of red paint. Attempts at stoping her rage-fueled rampage proved futile due to her Barrier technique until Nicodeme came to his partner's rescue. Her attentions shifted to the bunny instead and seeing him with Mathis, almost as though the man had 'replaced' her turned her rage onto him instead---she hurled a psychic ball of mindfuckery his way only to hit Mathis instead who got in between them and she was allowed a look into the man's mind.
To her shock, she came to realize that he had never forgotten her and had joined the military partly to find her after all this time, and upon delving deeper, found out that he had been coerced into agreeing to the 'trade' by officials who threatened his sister and himself with incarcertaion, interrogation and deportment as 'the enemy'.
Her confusion and despair at learning this made her drop her guard down far enough for Rory and Nicodeme both to take her out and she was stationed in the rehabilitation center.

Days later she was met with Mathis who had came to visit her out of the medbay and he offered to take her out, to show her around. Hearing that he was now an air force cadet, her curiosity was piqued again and she demanded to see his plane, a request which he complied with. Upon seeing the plane, she made note of the art and was surprised to find out that he had painted it in tibute to her and this led to a discussion of the war and its ramifications;
By the end of it, despite her misgivings about all that had happened between them, she agreed to partner with him not as a 'weapon' but as an equal---his 'co-pilot' and hive mind link to his Pokemon when they were out battling, an arrangement he agreed with.
Thus begins the slow process of mending burnt bridges....

The baby of the team, he was originally rescued by the military from his fate as a dancing bear—due tohis eagerness to learn and trust of humans, he became a quick favorite of many of the soldiers, for most part spared from their more Spartan training techniques. Getting loose from his holding pen one night, he lumbered right into Mathis and Rory’s tent, ate half their rations and subsequently into Mathis’ heart---Mathis adores him as something of a baby brother and he sees Mathis as a father figure. He is the only one of the original three who has no problems following orders.

It wasn't long before his parents treated him as a lost case and began to act as though he didn't exist which in all honesty, was absolutely fine with him as he reached teenagehood and skipped his advanced lessons to take more of an interest in his surroundings--that is to say, the vast forest which surrounded the grounds, a love for which drove him to pursue a path as a Game Warden instead of something related to bussiness.

While his siblings shunned him for being the family black sheep, his youngest sister Marianne was supportive of his pursuits and interests as well being bold enough to pursue her own in dancing, and was the only one asides him to show the servants some common decency--he grew close to her and her alone out of his entire family.....and needless to say that when his father set an arranged marriage for her to another clan as part of a long-standing deal, neither Mathis not Marianne took it very well.
Out of duty however, Marianne agreed to the arrangement and that was the last Mathis saw of her until a year and half later when he was in his twenties and living on his own---she had come to his place with burns to her face, begging her to hide him; Domestic abuse had ruled her life during that time, and her confrontation with her husband during one of his drunk periods had turned nasty before she managed to make a run for it.

To his anger, when asking for his family's help in charging the man, they refused, instead ordering him to hand her back to them so the matter could be dealt with privately, and that she should be returned to her husband as per the deal;

Something Mathis clearly couldn't stand for.

Before either of them could track down the two siblings, they had already boarded the first ship out of Canaclave heading for Johto.

Despite having no documents (of which were held by their family), the people were welcoming and the siblings found no problems in settling into their new home, away from their old life.

He took up a job at a local reservation near Ecruteak City as a Game Warden while she apprenticed under the reknown dancers of city's hall.
The gig paid him enough for them to live rather simply though it gave him more of an invaluable insight to the creatures which roamed the park, Poke'mon whom some viewed with mistrust. Through hands-on experience which involved a lot of bites, scratches and nearly-mauled digits, he learned that they were simply animals looking like all animals to survive one way or another, and could be reasoned with to an extent; When some villagers nearby threatened to lynch a group of Houndoom whom had strayed out of the park to hunt several of their sheep, he taught them to slowly gain the animals' trust by feeding them so they wouldn't kill livestock, and in return would protect them from other marauding creatures in considering the village their 'territory' and humans as beneficiaries as long as they did not harm the flocks.

When war came however, he found himself caught in crossfires as Pokemon whom he watched over vigilantly against poaching were suddenly treated as weapons of war instead of the nuinsance they were once to most of the populace. Local military, upon realizing that Ecruteak's warden had no documents and was an immigrant from an 'enemy' territory, gave him two ultimatums:
I. Give them the power to take what Pokemon they needed froom the reserve for military use, or
II. Be incarcerated and face deportation.

Mathis, knowing they couldn't return to Sinnoh was frced to betray the Pokemon which had come to trust him and watched as the forces emptied the reserve.

Left with no job and overbearing guilt, he came to the conclusion that if the Pokemon who had no bussiness being in a human war were going to serve on the frontlines, then he would honor their trust in him once more by joining them in protecting Johto.
And of course, the money was good.

Leaving Marianne with a young female Nidoran he had hand-trained specifically to guard her, he took his leave to enlist with the Johto Army, and found his.....first mate in the form of a murderous little Buneary who made to maim him first thing out of tis Pokeball.
While not overly fond of the little animal's temperament, he seeks to work things out the best he can with what he has learned as a Game Warden..to hopefully put some rabbit back into the beast who deems more wolf than lapine.

And help win the war. That's important too and all......

NOTES: Higher-ups and Johto heads know that he is originally from Sinnoh, and being the space case that he is, he's never really thought about hiding the fact from anyone and won't deny it if asked---as far as he's concerned, his old home is a lifetime away and now, he fights for Johto and his new life.
Whether this will get him intro trouble down the line remains to be seen.

CURRENTLY:
He has defected from Johto Military. After seeing the treatment of soldiers and civilians at the hand of the officers as well as their loss in Undella followed by Johto’s refusal to help evacuate the families of soldiers who were living in Unova, his respect for the military has dropped to a new low.
As it is, he already has no national loyalty to the region. Having despised the military’s Pokemon training methods from day one, Jane’s speech appeals to him and Katrya’s mental nudging both intrigues and puts him at ease as he is used to such ‘intrusions’ from Nike. After discussing matters, he decides to throw his towel in with the rogues when they promise him protection for his younger sister living in Ecruteak who will from now on be a part of the group. His loyalty to his friends has not changed---he refuses to harm them and will backhand anyone he sees trying to harm them.
His personality has taken on a more mischievous and confident air with a cause to fight by that he finally believes in. Joshua Imala and Ichigo Hitsubaki are his brother-in-arms and he has sworn to protect them as their Big Brother figure.

Despite being Mathis' partner, Nicodeme tends to act more like a feral, rebellious younger brat of a brother he wish he never had but is now siddled with. Nicodeme's idyllic life in the plains of Sinnoh came to a sreeching halt the day men with dogs came to corral the entire warren of Bunearies before separating them into two divisions: Lab Subjects and Sparring Fodder. His younger siblings were shipped off to the first and when he tried to stop them from being taken away and retaliated by nearly gnawing the ankles and fingers off several of the uniformed men, he was beaten within an inch of his life to drive home the concept of 'ownership' not just to him, but to the other hares as well.
Instead of being left for dead or turned into dogfeed however, one of the higher-ups saw some potential in that much fight in an animal supposedly meek and useless and he was shipped off to the training facilities to be drilled in the art of battling.
To bring out the inner beast that came with every animal's primal need to survive, he was not stationed with the more peaceful herbivores, but lumped together with dogs, cats and other carnivorous Pokemon who generally saw him as a walking buffet waiting to happen...until he went to town on their asses and they learned to steer clear of the Mad Rabbit.
Nico's hatred for humans didn't cease when he was given to Mathis as a partner, made rather plain when upon being released from his Pokeball, his first action was to bite off the tips of the rudely surprised man's third and forth fingers.
The sound thrashing that came next was nothing he didn't expect---what wasn't however was when the man made to tend to his wounds personally afterwards and for all the respect he had shown his 'master', that Mathis decided to keep him.

For most part, Nico's relationship with Mathis is still far from ideal---he remains steadfast about disliking humans though he understands his position as Mathis' partner and begrudgingly takes orders from him. Not to mention that dinnertime with Mathis tends to be a much better affair than most, as the man rarely feeds him anything he wouldn't himself eat, and for the bunny is secretively thankful for.
As such, while he may think of Mathis as a dumbass, Mathis is his dumbass goddamnit, and he will shank you if you try anything funny with his personal chef.

While Nico isn't capable of flight, he enjoys getting up and personal with airborne enemies via his ice beam which he uses to form slides, platforms and bridges from plane to plane. He uses Mathis' assigned spade as part of his arsenal and wears a spare parachute during missions.

Unlike Nicodeme, Nike and Mathis have known each other since peaceful times before the war where she was one of the Pokemon inhabiting the reserve he was entrusted to manage. Where most of the Pokemon wanted nothing to do with a human, not even one which was trying to help them, Nike saw him as a creature of interest and approached him despite outcry from her own clan who saw her as an oddball and a danger to herself. To their surprise, a strange friendship blossomed between the young fox and the hairless ape who took to her like a younger sibling. Intelligent, playful,inquisitve and curious to a fault, she saw him as a bastion of learning 'new things' and would aid him in managing the Pokemon through her communication skills in return for him teaching her the ways of humans.
Reading, writing, creative problem-solving, music and dance, all of it the little Abra took upon herself to learn as she realized that there was a far bigger world outside the reserve boundaries, and that this man was her glimpse to that world.

Mathis in turn found himself enthralled by what he saw as a genuine friendly symbiosis between a Pokemon and a human for the first time in his life and took it upon himself to document their activities, treating the Abra as a beloved pet subject; Her name 'Nike' was given to her in honor of her services to him as his 'goddess of victory' when it came to mediating the human-Pokemon problem that often cropped up at the edges of the reserve. As the place had been running low on funds since he came in, he decided to write a research paper on the intelligence of Pokemon to persuade the government to allot money to keep the place from being closed down and gazetted to human construction.
Their response had been favorable....

......

And then war came.

All the sudden, his many new friends and allies in the reserve had become a commodity to the local military overnight.
Nike, refusing to follow her clan's exodus to safety and opting instead fo stay behind and help her best friend through tough times found herself trapped, caged and treated to the sight of her friend bartering her off to strangers who put them in chains. Her love for humans had turned into a newfound rage instead, and it made her a difficult subject for the military to break in during a time when Pokemon training was very little understood and they were trated like beasts of burden, which she clearly was not. The more she fought, the harsher the punishment until one of the handlers took to scarring her face to teach her a lesson. Her outrage became more subdued after that though the handler himself was myteriously found dead days later after having 'fallen' on his military-issued hunting knife ten times.
Refusing to work with any soldier, she was slated to be put down until researchers spared her life by calling her in as a test subject due to her high degree of inteligence. Their kindness failed to win her over even though she begrudgingly followed their 'tests' through which a better method of training 'sentient' Pokemon through rote tasks and Pavlovian techniques were developed.

During a routine shift from one laboratory to the other, she passed by the station where cadets were to recieve their new Pokemon...

And saw Mathis.

To say she flipped her shit would have been a very kind understatement, and her latent telekinetic powers manifested in nothing short of an explosion as she tore away from her handlers and battery-assaulted the rudely surprised man who found himself a ragdoll being hurled from wall to table to window to comrades to wall again which were starting to gain an unneeded coat of red paint. Attempts at stoping her rage-fueled rampage proved futile due to her Barrier technique until Nicodeme came to his partner's rescue. Her attentions shifted to the bunny instead and seeing him with Mathis, almost as though the man had 'replaced' her turned her rage onto him instead---she hurled a psychic ball of mindfuckery his way only to hit Mathis instead who got in between them and she was allowed a look into the man's mind.
To her shock, she came to realize that he had never forgotten her and had joined the military partly to find her after all this time, and upon delving deeper, found out that he had been coerced into agreeing to the 'trade' by officials who threatened his sister and himself with incarcertaion, interrogation and deportment as 'the enemy'.
Her confusion and despair at learning this made her drop her guard down far enough for Rory and Nicodeme both to take her out and she was stationed in the rehabilitation center.

Days later she was met with Mathis who had came to visit her out of the medbay and he offered to take her out, to show her around. Hearing that he was now an air force cadet, her curiosity was piqued again and she demanded to see his plane, a request which he complied with. Upon seeing the plane, she made note of the art and was surprised to find out that he had painted it in tibute to her and this led to a discussion of the war and its ramifications;
By the end of it, despite her misgivings about all that had happened between them, she agreed to partner with him not as a 'weapon' but as an equal---his 'co-pilot' and hive mind link to his Pokemon when they were out battling, an arrangement he agreed with.
Thus begins the slow process of mending burnt bridges....

The baby of the team, he was originally rescued by the military from his fate as a dancing bear—due tohis eagerness to learn and trust of humans, he became a quick favorite of many of the soldiers, for most part spared from their more Spartan training techniques. Getting loose from his holding pen one night, he lumbered right into Mathis and Rory’s tent, ate half their rations and subsequently into Mathis’ heart---Mathis adores him as something of a baby brother and he sees Mathis as a father figure. He is the only one of the original three who has no problems following orders.
