The game that we’ve all been playing
Preston Wan, codename ‘Prowl’. To say I like Prowl wouldn’t be correct but I do find his characterization in IDW to be absolutely fascinating even if he is prime ACAB material at times. I love what a background schemer he is, except in a coldly pragmatic way as opposed to mostly benefiting himself like, say, Starscream.

He’s an asshole, but an asshole with a purpose who honestly believes he’s doing what it takes, what no one else has the guts to do, to win what has over four million years become a war of attrition, and the original sense of duty he had while back on Cybertron seems to have become warped to a burning desire to win at all cost, ostensibly to make everything they’ve gone through worth something. If not, what was the point of all of this?
Which makes his absolute frothing rage at the mere notion of Megatron possibly escaping what he sees as hard justice somewhat understandable——he doesn’t care who Megatron has become, he doesn’t care if Megatron repented and saved a billion lives in some other universe. What he cares about is that someone needs to fucking answer for the millions lost here, and with a large section of the remaining Cybertronian society (NAILs and Autobots specifically) very likely agreeing with him, the new system must be shown to work. More so, he does make a decent argument that this war might have been won a long time ago had the Autobots been a less splintered, unfocused faction compared to, surprisingly, the much more organized Decepticons who he seems to genuinely respect even as an enemy for what he sees as having their collective shit together. Mostly.

Like Prowl himself, Preston has a controversial ‘constructed cold’ background, in this case as a government-commissioned made-to-order child (one of a secret many) who was specifically raised to be a cop in a city that had a powerful class-based caste system. This has definitely left its mark in him, and he struggles at times trying to figure out which parts of him are him and which parts of him were specifically tailored to fit this role. He’s also trying to undo decades of government propaganda gangpressed into him which do not fit the Autobot code, but it’s got a much stronger hold in him that he’d like to admit.

I had a ton of fun figuring out his armor! His flip-up ‘door wings’ shoot a variety of projectiles now, usually deployed in a situation with multiple enemies which he likes to refer to as ‘crowd control’.
