Great lighting, and I like the direct eye contact of the subject--the way he's looking just slightly down at the camera combined with a face with the texture that suggests a lot of time outdoors and in the sun and the mountain-man facial hair and attire, all combined with the unflinching, direct eye contact all suggests self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-sufficiency in the subject. That's a lot of personality to convey through one photo! Additionally, the lighting is perfect! It creates bright spots in the eyes that draw the viewer's focus there, and the intensity of the eye contact holds the viewer's gaze. The black and white enhances this effect and the impact thereof. The lighting manages to highlight this expressive feature, creating a shine in the eyes, while maintaining the shadow cast by the hat which partially obscures the subject's eyes and upper face, allowing the slight air of mystery, the impression of a solitary mountain-man loner, to be maintained. Absolutely beautiful photo that really captures a person behind the face.

Hello (you asked for a critique so here I go),
This picture you took is literally straight forward. The subject looks at us straight in the eyes (or the lens, anyway). The small created in his eyes give power to the image. And the title (Know Thyself II), as I perceive it, expresses exactly the man's look. It seems as if one could determine his whole personality by looking at the portrait, and therefore this could mean he knows himself (I don't know if I'm understandable).
The squared frame gives even more power to his look and emotions, but close up portraits are also a bit common.
Good luck with your photography !
