Herkimer diamond. I've got a little bit of a story about this one. (:I went up the the Herkimer Diamond Mine for my birthday one year, and... well, I didn't bring any equipment because I don't own any mining gear. XD So, we had to use the basic stuff they gave us. I asked a guy who knew what he was doing for tips, and he politely explained that it was rather unlikely that we'd get anything great with the basic tools. So I was like 'Oh. Oops.'. Went to turn around, but before I could get too far, he calls, 'Catch!' and this rock right here comes flying at me. XD It was really nice of him.

I know that Put in Bay does some kind of "mining" that basically involves sifting sand with minerals in it through a stream of water... It's easy, but that's so fabricated; I want to try pure, natural, straight-from-the-source mining.

Getting the Herks out of that host rock is a bitch and a half. Unless you're using a serious sledge hammer and lots of "elbow grease" you won't usually find much. It's more like hard rock mining than what many tourists are used to.
