Description
Ok, one more destructive gun asked by . This time the goal was to make a believable plasma gun, so here it is!The Obliterator Gun (or technically MLIPCC MK I, Military Laser Induced Plasma Channel Cannon MarK I) is a huge bazooka-like device capable of emitting powerful plasma discharges, similar to a natural ball lightning in both power and appearance.
Here is how it works: The Obliterator uses three powerful batteries to produce high energy lasers. In a planetary atmosphere this lasers will overheat the gases and form a tunnel of plasma (high energy ionized gas). A powerful electromagnet is turned on a millisecond after the plasma tunnel was formed, impulsing the high energy matter to the target. The lack of other matter inside the laser tunnel makes the plasma travel in high speeds (220,000 km/h (140,000 mph)), hitting the target as a contained lightning, melting materials (it reaches 30,000 °C (54,000 °F)) and delivering 16 millions volts of electricity, capable to burn all the crew and circuits of a vehicle.
Because of the overheating, it also have a shoulder-mounted liquid nitrogen tank, and several tubes to cool the weapon after and during each shot.
The gun range is limited only by the density of the atmospheric gases. In good conditions (no clouds, no mist or smoke) it can hit a spaceship or a satellite in orbit, in bad conditions the gun range falls for some kilometers, but delivers a more potent blast (more gases to ionize in the laser tunnel).
It can work in vacuum conditions, but them it would use the nitrogen stored in the cooling tanks as ammunition, overheating it inside the laser tunnel.
In atmospheric conditions it can be fired several hundred times, and despite the silence, it's easy to detect the shooter because of the light and nitric acid gases it release (and smell of ozone). In vacuum it can be fired about 100 times before it needs to refill the liquid nitrogen tank.

Modeled in Sketchup, rendered in Twilight, a touch of Photoshop. Information researched in Wikipedia (Plasma, Electrolaser, Plasma Weapon, Lightning, Ball Lightning...)
And yes, US army and Boeing are researching to develop a weapon just like that. By now they can delivers just enough plasma energy to incapacitate a target, like a taser delivered by laser tunnels... at least according to Wikipedia

Well... I just found you profile. But I just love how detailed your descriptions are. I am afraid plasma works poorly in vaccum, and it can create very loud sound It depends on how it was made.
Well. Sh... sorry. I am afraid I may post more of those on your other pictures. Sorry for that, I am just like that, I may be wrong at some points, feel free to point it out. I remember some experiments I read about on the internet. Stationary gun like that, creating tunnel of plasma by special rotating lasers creating some kind of highly energetic, condensed plasma surrounded by almost vacuum, It had ability, quite literally, to shot lightning at great distances. Unfortunately, the Faraday cage effect of armoured vehicles made it only able to short circuits. and it loose power over distance. Not talking about Ridiculously high energy cost.

Thanks!
Well... yeah... plasma is not a reality yet, but maybe in the far future someone figures out how to use if effectively...

That is a very wicked weapon. I sure wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it.

i love the design, but i also love the description, not enough people create information behind their creations, fr them the art is stand alone, but its really cool to be able to see how the artist thinks it would work, rather than just dreaming it up myself. keep up the good work

Can I please have this in my game I am currently making? My game is set in the future, so this design is perfect for said game.

Well, you can have, but just with one condition... I want a free copy/premium account to me, hehehehehhehehe

Not really, its not an "explosion" gun, it deals with things that have no mass, like light and electricity, so there is no recoil

This is beyond awesome! So you know a bit about plausible plasma weapons? I've been wanting to design one for a very long time, though I want mine to fire bolts/balls of plasma, not just a beam. I suppose I could research ball lightning and see how those are thought to hold together, but I dunno. My plasma weapon could perhaps work like a cross between ball lightning and a plasma cutter.

The problem with Ball Lightning is that it float randomly, and its usually attracted by metal objects, and also not always cause damage when explode or pass thru an object... Its like releasing a loose potentially dangerous thing on the battlefield that can come back to you or your allies
It remembers me a bit about the chemical weapons used in the I World War, that sometimes backfired when the wind changed suddenly

Me Like, love the concept, ive done a few plasma rifle type designs in sketchup but nothing too great as of yet, i think i need some better render ware too. cool concept

I rendered it in Twilight,a render add-on for Sketchup. Its quite good and easy to use, but takes long time to render more complex images. I left it on for almost a week to render this one

Very impressive design, but it looks more like a working prototype than a finished product. A field-functional version would almost certainly come with some sort of casing to shield all those bits sticking out and make it more durable, as well as something to dim the light-up areas, though that can certainly be ignored for the sake of cool glowy bits.

Yap, its the Mk I version, just out of the laboratory
The light that comes from the refrigeration chambers are nothing next to the massive light it produces when fires. Its a lightning enclosed in laser beams, more than enough to blind anyone that look to it directly
