"What happened?" James asked. Scarlet turned to James. The look in her eyes made him think she was going to rebuke him, but she sat down opposite him.

"I was out hunting with a fellow tribe member," Scarlet began. "It was the first time she ever let me hunt with her. She was teasing me about how I got my power. So, I decided to prove it to her and challenged her to a battle of strength. She continued to mock me, saying I wouldn't stand a chance. I ended up breaking both her arms. She turned against me, calling me a freak, and said I would never belong."

"Then what happened?" James asked.

The look that Scarlet gave him told him everything.

"You killed her," James whispered.

"I lost control," Scarlet said. "I was just so angry." She stood up and walked across the room and turned away from James.

"When I returned to my tribe and told them what I had done, they turned me out," Scarlet said. "They rejected me."

"What didn't you do then?" James asked.

"I did the only thing I could do," Scarlet replied. "I ran away. I have lived in the wild, on my own ever since then."
