Description This was inspired by the film "Mozart and the Whale," a wonderful film about people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. I highly recommend it.

One of the more recognizable symptoms of AS (out of a slew of them) is the difficulty or inability of the person effected to discern facial expressions, or to connect them with their intended meaning, for others, and/or for the person themselves. They might smile when they're angry, or frown when they're happy. This is sometimes called "Inappropriate Affect."

I've had this image floating around in my head for some time now, and I thought it would also be good practice with Corel Painter X. I might actually turn it into a painting someday, but for now, this will do.

I remember in the movie when that woman was smiling and she said "I'm sad." XD

shouldn't it be "effect"?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Otacon144 In reply to ShnitzelKiller [2009-01-06 07:34:32 +0000 UTC]

Actually, no.

According to Merriam-Webster...

Main Entry:
1afΒ·fect
Pronunciation:
\ˈa-ˌfekt\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin affectus, from afficere
Date:
14th century

1(obsolete) : feeling , affection
2: the conscious subjective aspect of an emotion considered apart from bodily changes ; also : a set of observable manifestations of a subjectively experienced emotion < patients…showed perfectly normal reactions and affects β€” Oliver Sacks>

tl;dr, someone's affect refers to their body language and facial expressions.

Of course, as long as you give due credit, and get me a few more pageviews.

This was done as a perspective on Asperger's Syndrome and Autism.

It has a great effect as art but must be very difficult to live with.

I know your post is old, but anyways... My husband and people often think I'm upset because I don't smile often, when I should. After a while of them nagging you about it, then you do get a REASON to be upset. LOL

It can be very trying, yes. My childhood was both awkward and painful because of it.

I started drawing things as a way to try and understand them. That's why so many of my drawings are of people.

At least you have found something that helps a little. This would make a very good T-shirt!

^I agree completely with Entropy. :3

But it when I hear about differen't syndroms, I start thinkin, because my dad thought that I might have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (it sure seems like it, with how deicated I am to my oral health x.x), and said it sometimes seemed like I had Tourette Syndrome because of the odd and random noises I'd make.

And someone thought I had ADD because I kept switching between topics of conversation, but it's because I think of so many things at once and feel the need to get them out at the same time.

I have AS myself and that would explain my confusion. I learned what a smile and a frown is awhile ago (since they don't come naturally to me) but I still have issues. I seem to be able to only regonise is someone is frowning or smiling so I might think someone is sad when their mad, and I sometimes have trouble with voice or someone is yelling at me when their not, and sometimes my friend things I am tired or "being rude" when I am answering the phone, etc. I also have problems showing the right emotions at times as well, as well as I can, to what someone told me, have "odd body language" (which I can't recognise it in the first place).

So the "Inappropriate Affect" is something I deal with ALLOT, especially with my friend every now and then.

It's tough, isn't it? I myself had to learn what everyone else seemed to know naturally; facial expressions and tones of voice especially. I still have problems picking up on sarcasm at times.

It's good to know there are other people in the same situation.

Yea, it is >_<, and I eventually learned myself, especially from my friend. But I still have problems recognizing jokes and sarcasm myself, so I sometimes get offended by jokes >_<.

That really sounds interesting. I'm gonna look that Aspergers Syndrome up. I like the effect the handwritten words give on the black. I know nothing about design, but I think it makes a big difference that you added the period at the end too. It kind of makes me sad in a way too...(mausmouse=deep freak).

p.s. i must needs your painterX

I got it in a package from a website that sells software to students at my college. I have NO clue how some of those people can get such amazing works out of it, though.
