Description
This is one of my simpler but most effective designs. It represents interdependence, and illustrates how the foundation of one may hold the light of another. In this world we are all connected together in a great fabric of interdependence. We may not always see the connections, but this should not keep us from the realization that they exist.

This is a really really nice design. So simple and yet somehow so perfect.

Suspending the candle ABOVE the cup sort of tweaks the mind but still functions efficiently to catch any dripping wax.

My Old man was a master sculptor and my greatest (and toughest) teacher. He used to rail on me in my formative years about reducing forms to fundamentals. We tire of more complicated or "busy" compositions sooner than simple ones. And those that are severely streamlined to fundamental shapes often stick with us for years without becoming boring...He often used "Bird in space" by Constantin Brancusi as a good example of what he was talking about...

Your "Old Man" was right. We need simplicity and elegance (aesthetically) in our lives as humans. It's something that we always come back to. "Bird in Space" is a great example of what your father was talking about. My art appreciation teacher used that example as well.

I am constantly thankful of my father's (sometimes)harsh training as regards the realities of pursuing the life of an artist, dispelling the romanticism and instilling the discipline necessary to make it work in a country where there is little help.I was so fortunate to be able to convey my thanks to him before he passed (in 2004).His spirit still guides me...
Thanks for your comments friend.

This is very simple but also quite beautiful, in a simple, elegant way. How large is it?

Aileen,
It's about 20 inches long.
It's an old piece but still one of my favorites.

I was picturing something rather longer, as would go well on a fireplace mantel. I suppose this was designed more for a dining or end table?

I made several in different sizes,
It's one of the few designs I don't mind making more than one of.
At least one of my clients have theirs on their mantelpiece...

Wow what a beautiful idea, it took me a few moments to figure out where each candle went! It's almost surrealistic, but it's very simple and elegant. Nice photography too, it emphasizes the piece without making the background too complicated.

Thank you Claire,
you clued in on the very reasons for this piece.
Every once in awhile I have a bolt of brilliant illumination, and I've found ultimately that the simplest ideas are often the longest lasting...
The simple contrivance of having the candle seemingly suspended in space and the catch basin inches below was an epiphany for me ,and as you say, somewhat surrealistic at first blush...

I'll add to the chorus of nice designs. If you ever license this out so it is cheap enough for people like me to buy (aka poor ) then I'd definately buy it. Would like perfect on my altar, such air energy to it..

You're quite welcome! The glass world treats me well. But I'm also going to be doing a lot of metal work coming up, which I'm quite excited about. I also got a benchspace at a local foundry. Hoping to go in new directions! Stay tuned!

Good,
There's still some talk about me coming up for a group show on the Divine Feminin in Seattle next Spring.
The first venue was going to be The Chapel but now it looks like another site is being chosen becuase this may morph into a permanent gallery...
So,yes we should stay in touch.
I still see us showing together. Though we work in different mediums there is the connecting thread of the organic shapes, and I think it could be an interesting symbiotic contrast...

Rarely is that not the case, actually. One of the things I've noticed as a musician is that the older cats all make it look sooooo easy! The older drummers carry less shit around with them, set the kit up in a MUCH more efficient way and never work any harder than they have to. Of course, now that I'm one of the older cats, I understand that not working harder than you have to is pretty much the same as not working harder than you are capable of! Gawd, but I hate getting old!
So, simple is better, yes. And this piece is a splendid example!

Better to go with the flow friend (since it's pretty much inevitable)LOL ,
that way you get to the other side without such an expenditure...
All joking aside,I'm actually loving being 53.
For the first time in my life I feel like I'm not being driven by my hormones, that I have the luxury to have sex when I want to rather than because I NEED to like a fix...Not the usual response of most 50 somethings I'm sure, but this to me is a new FREEDOM...

Yeah, being 56 ain't so bad either. I could do with a LOT fewer guys dropping dead at 56, but other than that, it's OK. My music is not as difficult any more cause I don't have to try as hard and - that sex stuff ain't so bad, either!
Woo-Hoo!

Thank you my friend,
I had a chance to look at your work once again.
You are very accomplished for one so young and I see great things in your future.
The CRAFT can always be learned and improved on,but your innate sense of scale, proportion, composition and balance adds up to a special kind of beauty that CANNOT be learned. One either has it or does not...
It would be wonderful to see what you make at my age...
There is a subtle but enduring satisfaction one gets from making beautiful objects by hand.
Over the course of 20 odd years it develops a particular muscle of WILL. To see an idea in your head, then make that vision, becomes easier and easier.Sooner or later you become known as a MAKER...very powerful stuff.
