We rewatched Firefly recently (or some episodes at least), so... what can I say? Couldn't help myself.
The Firefly-class vessel Serenity landing somewhere on a border world.
Based on Joss Whedon's universe and TV show Firefly and motion picture Serenity .

To comment on the points you made:
The overall fading into black was not meant to be realistic as such. I am well aware that it wouldn't work that way in a real atmosphere. It was a take on part of the theme song which states, quote, 'take me out to the black...'. Since you say you don't know the show it's understandable, that you wouldn't catch that.
The distance of the planet is, of course, debatable, however, if you were on a moon with an atmosphere close to a much larger planet, it may look simiar. It's difficult to say, since we don't have any real world references at this stage.
So, to summarize, I was more going for the 'TV show feel' and related reference in the overall composition than actual real life and scientific accuracy. Thank you though for making those comments, from a neutral point of view they are definitely valid.

Looks like it could be the desert on Bellerophon, from the episode "Trash" Any Browncoat would know the episode just by one word "Yo-Saph-Bridge"

Yeah, why not? I didn't have anything particular in mind, just had to get the usual 'Firefly based image' out of my system that usually lines up whenever I rewatch the show or movie. Just aimed to recreate the mood of the show.
While I'm certainly a fan of the entire Firefly universe, I'm a Star Trek fan at heart.

Serenity the movie / FireFly TV show is my all time favorites. And Firefly - Browncoats was awesome as well.

Oh yes. If there was one show I could pick to have at least a second season, or the first one completed for that matter, then that would be Firefly.

Indeed. And the cool part about the show, the director Joss Whedon did not add sound when the ship is in space. Think about it for a second. In reality there is no sound in space. Joss did it right. Trek , Star Wars and other sci-Fi did it wrong.

Yeah, that's true. I guess that's the over all sci-fi concept. But then Firefly was closer to 'current tech' than most other sci-fi shows, so the realism factor worked well! From what I know that gravity drive employed by the Firefly class isn't that far away from NASA's ion drive concept.
