Description This I made from a Teresa Wentzler pattern called "The Castle". It was the first cross stitch I ever did, many yrs ago, and it took me close to a yr to complete! Little did I know how long something like this would take then! But I instantly fell in love with cross stitching and have been doing it ever since.

Oh and for those of you that don't know about cross stitching. This started off as a totally blank piece of Aida cloth. Aida has little squares and on the paper pattern each color has a different symbol. So where ever you see that symbol is where you stitch that color. Starting off is the hardest part b/c you have to be very careful with your counting the little squares on the cloth to match the pattern on the paper. Large and detailed patterns like this definitely aren't for the faint of hearted!

It took me a LONG time to finish mine! LOL Not only because it was the first cross stitch I ever did so was learning as I went but it's so detailed. But it was definitely worth finishing it. You should continue with yours. Even if it takes you months or yrs...finishing such a beautiful pattern give you such a good feeling of accomplishment.

Thank you. Teresa Wentzler's patterns are very involved but just beautiful once the work is done. I have a few of her other dragon patterns that I do plan on doing in the near future.

And glad you like my avi. It's of one of my White's Tree frogs, Clint.

Glad you like it. Yeah Teresa Wentzlers stuff can be pretty complex. But she has some of the nicest ones out there. I have a few others of her's that I do plan on working on in the future.

I always have two or more cross stitches I am working on going at the same time...this way if I tire of one I can pick up another one. I don't currently have any of her other patterns in that mix...but I might have to start one this week. I have "The Guardian", "The Story Teller", "Above the Clouds"...and a bunch others. Yeah I better get working on them!

This turned out very nice! I love to do counted cross stitch too, but haven't done it for a few years. I have a couple pictures of the ones I've done in my gallery.[link] [link] I actually have this pattern, but haven't done it yet. I like to do wildlife cross stitch and you wouldn't believe how many books I have. I would love to get back into this in the near future, but first I need to invest in a good pair of reading glasses as I can't see close up to do this kind of work anymore. LOL

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to Tazzy- [2010-04-24 00:10:58 +0000 UTC]

Those both are really nice. I love cross stitching...very relaxing for me. They do sell special magnifiers for cross stitching...I know I have seen them in the craft stores. Thankfully my eyes are ok...right now. I dread the day I can't work on these anymore! I'll get eye surgery if I have to just to be able to cross stitch!

Tazzy- In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-24 16:10:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I too love cross stitch and also find it very relaxing! A lot of people tell me that they wouldn't have the patience to do something like that. LOL It does take a long time to finish a project, but you really have something nice when you do get it finished. I have seen the magnifiers, but think I would do better with just reading glasses. Otherwise I would need one to see what I'm stitching and the other to read the pattern. Also, I think just having reading glasses would allow me to sit more comfortably and not put a strain on my neck or back.

I hate to say this, but as you creep past 40, the really close up vision tends to go. LOL And, I don't think they have surgery for that, you just have to get bifocals, which I can't stand or reading glasses. It's like all the sudden one day *poof* you can't really see the small stuff. LOL

I currently have two projects started, one is a fairly large school of dolphin and the other is a Bald Eagle head. I always have at least two going at once so I don't get so bored when it's taking so long to get the one finished. I will stitch on one for a couple weeks and then switch to another. Right now I just don't have time to stitch, but once the kids move out and I have more time for myself, I want to get back into it. I would also like to get a program to turn my photos into cross stitch.

I don't know if you do this or not, but it has been very helpful for me. I will make a copy of the pattern and as I stitch things, I use a highlight marker to mark what I just stitched. Helps me not get lost where I am on a pattern.

PaganFireSnake In reply to Tazzy- [2010-04-25 20:59:09 +0000 UTC]

It is hard getting older. My mom does one of those things with moving something back and forth in front of her until she can see it. I tease my husband, who is 42, that he is gonna start loosing his vision soon. But he actually have better vision then I do!

I do the same thing with working on at least two cross stitches at the same time. Even when I finish one..I then start another one even if the second one's not finished yet.

I do mark of the symbols once I am done with it too. Especially in the beginning it makes it so much easier.

Yes. Teresa Wentzler has some of the best designs for dragons. I do have a program tho where I can turn any picture into a cross stitch pattern. I am planning on doing one of my tortoise eventually.

I stopped buying store patterns years ago. I make all my patterns using Microsoft Paint. It takes a while depending on how big the pattern is but I get the satisfaction of knowing it is one of a kind.

The picture will have to be small on MS Paint because you will have to enlarge it to be able to use the "show grid" function. If you need help in figuring out how to do it let me know.

This was your first piece? Are you mad? (In that sort of off the wall way that I like and admire?) I've been cross stitching since I was three years old and I haven't managed to get this one done yet. Mostly due to a lack of enough time and having the pattern in my possession at the same time, but still. Bravo!

PaganFireSnake In reply to kitten42 [2010-03-31 14:20:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I totally had no idea what I was getting myself into! But when I set my mind to something I will not give up until I accomplish it. And to be honest I think that b/c of this piece I actually like other CS patterns that are as detailed as this. I think it's the challenge and great feeling of accomplishment you get when you finish something you worked so hard on. But you REALLY have to love a pattern like that too or you aren't gonna finish it. Cross stitching and herptiles are the two things I love the most and have unending patience for.

! My husband thinks I am crazy too with some of the ones I do. He always says something like," My eyes would get all screwed up if I tried something like that!". But in a good way..he really respects it b/c he sees the time and effort I put into them. And ohhhh gawd your hand spinning a fleece! I don't know if even I would attempt that....well maybe not right now! That is the next big craft I try in the future!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kitten42 In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-04 17:15:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my husband's amazed at both my knitting and my embroidery. Of course, I'm still amazed at yours. He loves watching me make socks because he loves watching me "use five sticks and a string to make a sock".

Spinning is very soothing. The key to the whole thing lies in how you prepare the fleece before you even get near a wheel or pick up a drop spindle. If you take your time and prepare the piece you'll be spinning well, it'll go like a dream. If you don't, it will be miserable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to kitten42 [2010-04-22 01:00:05 +0000 UTC]

I am always been a little afraid to tackle socks. Heard they can be tricky. But my husband saw a pattern of a Christmas stocking he really likes and wants me to make it for him. I might have to give it a try.

I'd love to get a spinning wheel...I might have to check out some craft shows.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kitten42 In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-22 11:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Socks are easy. If you can do increases, decreases and count, you can knit a sock. That goes double if you don't have to try and fit it. My very first sock came out perfect, except for being three inches too long.

I use a high whorl hand spindle instead of a wheel. Cheaper, about as fast and you don't have to worry about learning to pedal right and learning to spin at the same time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PaganFireSnake In reply to kitten42 [2010-04-22 15:25:58 +0000 UTC]

Heck as long as I can make it so it at least looks like a sock I will be happy.

I am gonna have to keep my eye open for that spindle you mentioned.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kitten42 In reply to PaganFireSnake [2010-04-24 00:37:12 +0000 UTC]

They are sold as high whorl or top whorl spindles. It's a pole with a disc at the top and a hook on top of the disc. It's best to get one with three or four notches on it. They're really very handy, I have several in different weights.

I have faith in your ability to make it look like a sock when you finally try one.
