Description Alright another AH Japanese weapon. An automatic rifle for World War II. Design was influenced by Japanese light MGs and typical assault rifle design. When I finished noticed it looked also a lot like the IMI Galil of the IDF, not intended.

I'd imagine it would have been single shot with a full auto option. Possible able to swap magazines with similar caliber MG.

Looks like the Vz.61 Skorpion and Stg 44 combined.

Ironically the Japanese already had anΒ intermediate power cartridgeΒ in the form of theΒ 6.5Γ—50mmSR Arisaka and was used by the Russians for theΒ Fedorov Avtomat an early predecessor to the assault rifle. If the Japanese had ever made a true assault rifle then it would have been likely for them to use the 6.5x 50mm SR Arisaka.

While the 6.5mm Arisaka performs like an intermediate, it is a battle-rifle length cartridge. Thus, your magazine is going to need to be larger.

Thanks, supposed to be late 40s or 50s technology. It would have been futuristic at its time though.

Well this is an alternate history rifle so it didn't really exist. If it had I agree the AK would be the predominate weapon. Japanese firearms of WWII were actually quite terrible, especially as the war went on. The quality degraded so bad that some had quite a high chance of exploding in your hand. An AR would be outside Japan's abilities and be probably a poor weapon.

Maybe we'll see. I've always thought the BAR could be modded into an AR. However you would need a smaller caliber first.

This is an alternate history rifle. AFAIK the Japanese never developed an assault rifle idea during the war.

A little too heavy to be a true assault rifle. Perhaps more importantly, the Japanese wouldn't have had the industrial output to manufacture the weapon in the required quantity, even if production had began back in 1941 and lasted until wars end in 1945. The Japs never had enough light machine guns, so how would they have raw materials, labor and machine tools for a trial deployment of LMG-based assault rifle designs? Interesting idea though. The Japs did make a copy of the M1 Garand in 7.7mm Arisaka called the Type 5 in 1945. Only a couple dozen were produced though.

This timeline is easy and does not need to be to contrived, Negotiations between Japan and Nazi Germany break down (due to the Nazis being racist assholes and everything) and the two never become allies. When WWII comes along, the Japanese side with the British (their traditional allies) against Hitler, sending men and supplies over, As Japan is allied against Hitler, the US backs down on the blockades. Pearl Harbor never happens, no war in the pacific. The US eventually enters the war against Hitler and lend leases Japan some manufacturing equipment. The Japanese learn hard lessons in Africa and Europe and apply them to their armies fighting in China. After reviewing the performance of the Sturmgewehr, they put into production Assault rifles after the war.

Interesting timeline. What also easily could have happened (had it not been for FDR "diplomacy") is that Japan and Germany remained allies (Japanese were just as racist as the Nazis, they saw their Chinese and Korean neighbors as sub humans)and both end up ganging up on the Soviet Union. Many in the US saw Hitler and Imperial Japan as buffers against the spread of Lenin's Bolshevik communism which by this point was already making ideological inroads into China as well as much intellectual support amongst leftists in the west. Britain, had it not pledged to defend Poland in March of 1939 could easily have stayed neutral as Switzerland when Germany attacked September of that year. Remember Britain and France both declared war on Germany first in 1939 before Germany showed any interest in another western-front World War. German generals and Hitler had remembered what had happened when Germany tried to fight a two front war 20 years earlier in World War I. Long story short, the US, Britain and France stay neutral as Germany and Japan butt-rape the Soviet Union, wiping out the world's then-only communist government off the map. Endless Guerilla warfare over the next several years would probably keep the Axis too occupied and bankrupt to try and attack the west. So, back to the original question- would we have a Type 96-based 6.5mm assault rifle- probably something of the sort!

Yeah its more a creative idea than actual concept. Plus Japanese small arms were notoriously poorly made. I wouldn't want an assault rifle that could blow up in my face!

From what I saw on your profile I'm not surprised you liked this one. FYI I've also designed an Okha flying bomb into a guided anti-ship missile.
