Description
A little sketch that I distracted myself with, when I should be working on more important things. (As usual)Here we have poor dear Nott being bullied by a random, unnamed female of Chinese type... he has no idea that she is just "playing" with him, so he's appropriately distressed. Never mind that she's tiny, and that he's quite tall! Makes no difference when you're caught off guard!
Besides, Nott's very serious, and isn't much for fighting. He's above that, remember.
She should really stop it this instant and apologize!
Watercolor and ink in my sketchbook, of all things!

Aw, poor Nott... I can't help but feel sorry for him, seeing the pained expression on his face.
The little female reminds me of a scottish terrier for some reason. Small, but tough and wily with a big attitude.
The dynamic poses are wonderful, the anatomy looks spot-on to me, and I love the little patches of grass. XD
I really envy how you can have such contrasting designs, one short and small, the other big and lanky, with different markings, fur patterns, and facial features... and still have them be recognizable as the same species. A lot of people really don't realize how hard that is to pull off well. @_@
Now, this might just be my computer, as I'm viewing this on a laptop... so please feel free to disregard this if I'm wrong.
I think the styles you rendered the fur in clash a little bit to me. Nott's fur is shaded very softly, with nice gradients and shadows... he looks like he belongs in a watercolor painting... while the female is done in sharp blacks and whites, almost like she's a silhouette, like she just jumped out of an ink drawing. I like both styles, of course, but I'm not sure if they mesh entirely well together here. I think maybe leaving a few lighter, softer highlights on the female might have been nice, to give her body a little bit more depth.
One minor nitpick... maybe, I think the female's expression, although it's wonderful as is, might have been a bit more intense/fierce if her pupils were focused towards Nott's face... or maybe have her head tilted a bit more towards him.
(But maybe this would be missing the point, haha... the description does say she's only playing, after all!)

Aww, thank you! I find it incredibly hard to make these critters diverse enough... I seem to gravitate towards a sort of static and expressionless idealism at times, and it's really hard to break from. This was a bit of fun to shake it up!
I think you're completely right about the two contrasting styles, and it's definitely not your computer. It was me deciding that I'd add color to a finished ink drawing at the last moment...
And since she was nearly completed in ink (and black on top of all that) she looks completely separate from our dear Nott, who had to be finished with the dark brown watercolors. So you're definitely right about that.
Ah, yes... I didn't think of that, either. But perhaps it's okay, maybe otherwise she'd look too ferocious? (she seems really focused on yanking that ear.
)
And thank you! It's always so nice to read your comments!

Ah, I see! Yeah, that makes sense.
Oh yes, she is definitely focused on chewing that ear. I wasn't really sure what level of ferocity you wanted... I just thought I'd mention it, just in case.
Really? Honestly, I feel so bad for not commenting more often; It's just that... I like to really have something meaningful to say, you know? Most of the time I'll see your beautiful artwork, and read the description and go "Oh, that's so awesome! I must say something amazing and profound about this piece!" and still can't think of anything to write in the comment box. Ah well. @_@

No worries at all! I'm always welcome to all suggestions.
It's good for me to know how people interpret what they see in a piece, because I can't always trust what my own eyes see...
Oh, but I won't be forcing you to comment more often!
(Though I do really appreciate them, especially as you always have so much content in your comments.
So nice to read!!)
I fail at commenting half of the time, the internet distracts me more and more with each passing day.

Oh, I hope I didn't come off as thinking you would force me to comment! You seem much too nice for that sort of thing.
I'm just lamenting the fact that I don't have the time, or when I do, I seem to have nothing important to say, is all. o_o

Hooray for distractions! Good work. I like the colors, how it looks slightly washed-out cause of the medium used. It's not thick, and helps with the playful sense since it's colored "cartoon-like" if you will. Nott's expression is priceless.

(ps) - that kid of reminds me of an antic one of my dogs used to get up to to intimidate visitor's dogs that were about three times her size (she's a border collie X Chihuahua ) - she would wait until they were about to jump into their owner's car, then she'd ambush them in mid-air..

She's mellowed a lot with age (she'll be 12 this year), but I've googled the breed mix & the elite few who've also had them say they're very much like super-intelligent Jack Russels, which I'd agree with.

You did it!
Poor Nott, the Chinese Pallanophs really do look like they put up a good fight!
Reminds me how those tiniest little black ants are really the ones that hurt
On another note, I really like those back dewclaws- reminds me of a Velociraptor

I did! I do feel sorry for him, I should give him a hug... but he'd probably squirm out of that. Or do a scene with someone a little nicer?
It's the little things that get you! Maybe that's why I'm cautious around small dogs, or even people that are smaller than myself, ha ha! (Because I'm pretty used to the tall people. Harmless!)

I'd say I'm a medium sized person. But small considering how tall the rest of my immediate family is! Maybe that's it!
I had a collie when I was younger... loved him! People were always a little scared of him because he was bigger than your average collie, but once they figured out that he wanted them to pet him, they loved him, too. Dang, I miss that dog...

How adorable! I use to love collies so much as a kid (Lassie's fault perhaps). That's what's so good about big dogs! Your own personal body guard. People are usually afraid of my dog as she's big, black and loud. She is so sweet though, despite being 13 she's still a pup at heart

And they always think they're little puppies, no matter how big/old they get! I'm still amazed that people never seem to realize that they're just gentle giants and want attention!

Indeed
I always find it strange when people opt for smaller dogs because they're more 'managable'. The only small dog our family had turned out to be the vicious one we had to get rid of

pallanoph In reply to Y-Esk [2009-07-15 15:34:01 +0000 UTC]
Oh, they can be so disastrous! And people do the weirdest things with them, like almost pretending the dog is their little kid or something.
Sounds scary! I've dealt with a particularly frightening Jack Russel before. Jumped at my face. Eeks!

Eep! One of my friends actually got her face badly bitten (around her eye somehow) by a border collie. It was nasty, all she did was pat it and all of a sudden it leapt up an bit her even needed stitches.
...I think that goes against our previous discussion on the small dogs being the nasty ones though
