Description
"the sky is red.""really?"
your lips tickled my ear
"yes."
i had to keep talking
as if you would let go of me as soon as I ran out of words.
really i would not fall far if you let me go
off the couch and onto a discarded afghan
but it would still kill me.
"diamonds fall from the sky
then disappear."
"you've always loved the sky."
"this place is made of sky. it has two of them.
the clouds are as sweet as syrup
and people eat them by the handful."
you kissed me on the temple
"we should go-"
"wait. i have to warn you.
the stars explode. every year." I breathed
you still got up, almost tripping over the afghan.
we roasted marshmallows
as we watched the sun set
over the lake.
you pushed me in
because you told me that the reflection of the sunset
looked even more stunning with ripples in it
but you jumped in after me
and we tried to catch fish in the increasingly dark water
with our bare hands. we caught each others' feet more often.
on the dock we lay out
as if the splashes of light from the fireworks
would dry us.
with every loud bang the dock would shake
and you would tell me something i already knew.
long after the fireworks stopped
we huddled in the afghan because the world was too big
and let the waves kiss our toes.
the sky was dark with clouds now and the wind
helped you to keep hair out of your face.
hail started falling, but you made me dance with you before we ran
shrieking and laughing inside.
back on the couch you asked me
"can you take me to that place?"
i looked at the hail melting in the lake
"i can't believe you haven't noticed.
we're there."
