Description And then I felt like taking photos of bones. (And putting them together in the messiest layout in a while.)

Anyway. If you ever come across a sudden need to draw a skull of a small canine, feel free to reference this. I hereby give you permission to reference, trace or even copy stuff from this particular ref. If it helps you, it has done what it was made to do. Have fun!

Featuring all my current canines.

*Sigh* Someday I dream I could buy a replica wolf skull to add to the collection. I'm just really bad at saving up for one. If only there wasn't so many awesome people offering commissions every time I manage to get some money...

(Also, the dog needs a name. To keep with the main theme of my skulls, it should be a name from any of Shakespeare's plays, and if possible, I'd like the name to belong to an old character. The skull is old, and I'd love to keep the Grandpa-feel to it. Suggestions welcome.)

Lear or Claudius are old man Shakespeare names. XD
And I personally love the name Shylock. So close to Sherlock. Cx
Anyways, this is a really nice study! Your skulls are positively glorious for this kind of comparison. ^^

Haha, I love the name Shylock too. Unfortunately I can't use it, though, my crow skull already claimed that name.
Thank yous!

also, maybe Belthasar or Antonio for a name?

Random-Star [2012-03-12 23:40:59 +0000 UTC]

Interesting reference, I never noticed how... round a dog's head is. XD Also, as for a name for Gramps, you could call him Prospero.

Paperiapina In reply to Random-Star [2012-03-13 08:56:02 +0000 UTC]

The dog's head shape of course depends on breed, but small dogs do have generally rounder heads than the wild canines of the same size.

I'd be interested in seeing the differences in skulls of different breeds. I bet a chihuahua skull could fit inside a mastiff's skull.

Anything that I should watch out for?

And you should name Gramps King Lear. :'D

Paperiapina In reply to Cathselprime [2012-03-13 08:33:32 +0000 UTC]

Depends on what you want, and where you get it from. The laws regarding buying and owning animal bones might vary from country to country, and I've understood that the laws vary between states in the US too. I recommend being aware of what your local laws say, specially if you buy something from outside of wherever you live. Generally domesticated animals are okay (dogs, cats, cows, etc.). There's also a thing called CITES, which is an international list of animals that are protected, and are therefore forbidden to import and/or export (without right permits). If it's listed on CITES, it's no-no to buy one from abroad without a license. The list can be found online, so it's easy to check once you find something. (That's why I'm looking for a replica wolf instead of a real wolf skull, as wolf is listed on CITES.)

Oooh, okay O:
Thank you for telling me this! I'll definitely be looking into the local laws here.
If you hadn't told me I probably wouldn't have known to check- /shot

Thank you again! :'Db

Paperiapina In reply to Phasellus [2012-03-13 07:47:52 +0000 UTC]

Have you ever considered replicas? They're often as pretty as the real deal, but being plastic they avoid the "eww-factor".

Phasellus In reply to Paperiapina [2012-03-13 23:48:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, not really, but I suppose I'll have to look into them sometime. Though, real would be preferred, but if the replicas are accurate that would be awesome. Either way, collecting bones are on my bucket list.

How about Duncan for the dog skull? He has all those holes so he could have been attacked (it would make for a fun story to tell at least)

and those skulls seemed so big at first, then i realized you were using pens to hold up Titus and the dog skull. they seem so small now! but cool

THANK YOU for the wonderful chart!!
I found a full body skeleton in the woods weeks ago of what I thought was a dog or fox, and I am finally now able to identify it - apparently it's a red fox! It looks exactly like Titus! He's going to my sister for her birthday (she's in veterinary school right now) and I named him already for her.

Coincidentally his name is Yorick, too!
