Description And then I felt like taking photos of bones. (And putting them together in the messiest layout in a while.)

Anyway. If you ever come across a sudden need to draw a skull of a small canine, feel free to reference this. I hereby give you permission to reference, trace or even copy stuff from this particular ref. If it helps you, it has done what it was made to do. Have fun!

Featuring all my current canines.

*Sigh* Someday I dream I could buy a replica wolf skull to add to the collection. I'm just really bad at saving up for one. If only there wasn't so many awesome people offering commissions every time I manage to get some money...

(Also, the dog needs a name. To keep with the main theme of my skulls, it should be a name from any of Shakespeare's plays, and if possible, I'd like the name to belong to an old character. The skull is old, and I'd love to keep the Grandpa-feel to it. Suggestions welcome.)

Is the 'grandpa dog' a boxer? X3 He kind of looks like one, or maybe a pit bull~

I can't say for sure, but the dog could be some kind of spaniel. Breeds like boxers and pit bulls are bread to have strong bite, so they have much larger crests, while Grandpa here doesn't really have any. Boxers also have proportionally shorter and a lot more upturned muzzles. Here, I found a picture: [link]

Oh cool, thanks~ <3
I don't know, it just kind of looked like one because of the teeth, which in the front view, looked a lot like most of the boxers I have seen. :/

He does have kind of a boxer-ish smile in the front view.

Baptista? The father of Katharina (the shrew) and Bianca from Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew? That character always reminded me of a dog.... And I don't know why...

Thanks so much for this though! It's helpful to see the skulls from different angles.

Incredibly helpful -- I'm working on a project that involves drawing a lot of dogs and will definitely be coming back here for reference on head shapes. Where do you get all these wonderful bones? They're just so cool ejafnuhdsol

How about Egeus for Grandpa Dog? Blah I'm not terribly familiar with Shakespeare, sorry.

Thanks! I'm glad if I could help.

They are from different places. Titus was bought from an American taxidermist, Hamlet was extremely lucky found as a fresh carcass in the forest that I cleaned myself with a help of couple of friends, and the dog came to me from a German taxidermist shop.

Now that you mention it, it is very spaniel-like. Short muzzle and wide head with big eyes and a sloping stop... hmmm....

This one's head shape seems very similar [link]

Hey! Around the end of march Skullery on Etsy is gong to have a replica wolf skull available (this is what she told me, though it might take longer now that she will be out of town) but they are FAR cheaper than most replicas. I got a very nice fox skull from her and I love it to death C: Just thought Id let ya know since you seem to want a wolf skull.

ohhh! I feel so happy! My mom used to say that I was all wrong because I liked bones and skulls (I have the head bones of a fish, though I forgot where it is). I'm glad that I'm not the only one out there that likes this kind of stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Paperiapina In reply to Az-The-Dragon [2012-03-12 23:07:22 +0000 UTC]

Pff. It's anatomical reference. You know that many of the best reneissance painters were also graverobbers, since that was their only way of studying anatomy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Az-The-Dragon In reply to Paperiapina [2012-03-13 07:57:00 +0000 UTC]

leaving out the anatomical reference, though, I am fascinated by the structure of bones, whole skeletons in particular. Now my fascination has dwindled, but back when I was much younger, I used to come back home with a cow bone found somewhere (lived in country) and say "Look! A dinosaur bone!"

I think my mom was disturbed because, unlike other girls, I didn't play with dolls.

Paperiapina In reply to Az-The-Dragon [2012-03-16 10:10:24 +0000 UTC]

Pfft,I never played with dolls either, despite being a girl. I was too busy having fun with my dinosaurs.

And, well, yes, bones are beautiful. Fine pieces of life.

Jännää, mutta pakko sanoa, että huomasin, kuinka inhottavan näkönen niitten nenien sisäosat on! XD Niin repaleista.. Also, jossain vaiheessa alkoi kuvottaa, kun tajusin, että katselen kuolleitten eläinten päitä, jatkoin kuitenkin lukemista! XD

On kyllä mahtavaa tämä.

Paperiapina In reply to TessuSaysHi [2012-03-12 20:30:45 +0000 UTC]

Forgive me since I don't keep up, but how about Ceasar? (He did write Julius Ceasar after all... if my memory is correct.) Or Prospero (From "The Tempest").

Either way, thanks for putting this up! It's a really good reference for art! (Especially since 4/5 of what I draw are canines.) Also, if you started offering commissions you might be able to get that skull faster.
