Description
And then I felt like taking photos of bones. (And putting them together in the messiest layout in a while.)Anyway. If you ever come across a sudden need to draw a skull of a small canine, feel free to reference this. I hereby give you permission to reference, trace or even copy stuff from this particular ref. If it helps you, it has done what it was made to do. Have fun!
Featuring all my current canines.
*Sigh* Someday I dream I could buy a replica wolf skull to add to the collection. I'm just really bad at saving up for one. If only there wasn't so many awesome people offering commissions every time I manage to get some money...
(Also, the dog needs a name. To keep with the main theme of my skulls, it should be a name from any of Shakespeare's plays, and if possible, I'd like the name to belong to an old character. The skull is old, and I'd love to keep the Grandpa-feel to it. Suggestions welcome.)

What about Lear? He's old. This is absolutely fascinating.
You could also call him Polonius from Hamlet...

The brain cavity on that dog skull is impressive. Do you know what breed of dog the skull belonged to?
I like the name Polonius for him.

This is really cool. I know it'll be helpful for me.
Looking at this makes me wonder how all of them died, though. Do you know for all of them?
Also, I'd help with a name, but I don't remember the name of the guy I'm thinking of. lol I love Shakespere, though. That's cool that you named all your skulls after characters of his...if not a bit creepy. xD

Hamlet was killed by a bigger animal, possibly a wolf or a big dog. The back of the skull was shattered, and both shoulderblades were pierced, and yet there was no visible injury on the body when I found him with couple of friends. His skin was intact, so it couldn't been shot.
The others I can't say for sure as I bought them instead of cleaning them myself, but the dog looks really old (brittle bone and sort of bad teeth at parts). The fox is a mystery, but at least it wasn't from fur farm. (Ranched foxed grow bigger than wild ones, an it's smaller than my other fox Yoric which is wild fox for sure.) I suspect hunted or roadkill.

A dog groomer's opinion on the dog skull, given the size in comparison to a fox as well as jaw shape, teeth size and the roundness of the backskull, I will guess he could also be a small but stout terrier, such as a Mini Schnauzer or a Westie. I considered Cocker Spaniel as well, but if you "draw" dog features over it, it reads more terrier to me.
Just my thoughts. Nice references!

Wow. I see these guys and keep thinking that I would love to have a few reference skulls of my own. I imagine they help a lot with your character designs and anatomy.
As for a name... what about a charcter from Macbeth? Duncan, Banquo, Macduff, Ross, Lennox, or Malcolm. Personally, I like Ross. Just a thought. (3

They sure are helpful! There are couple of times in my comic where holding a real skull at hand while drawing helped me a lot.

No problem. =3
Thats what Im thinking based off of his bone structure. Its about the size of a Spaniel. They dont have really strong jaws either since they have to have that soft bite.

If you want to get that off you can get some acetone (think nail polish remover) and it will help dissolve the glue.

thus-sung In reply to sanr4 [2012-03-13 14:55:46 +0000 UTC]
No, only to the glue. You don't need to soak it very long or anything, you can even just dribble some directly on to the hot glue.
