I usually just start with the general face shape. is it more squared, oval, round? and then you can work out where the cheekbones go. and the eyes. I guess with practise you get better. But I haven't practised >__> just try to understand shading and little details.

shade the nose, don't give it a line except for maybe at the nostrils, same goes for the lips. Lots of careful shading. Work hard on achieving the face shape first, and work from that. My drawings might not be photograph look-alikes, but I hope those tips help you out in the future.

don't forget to add in some cheekbones, either. the shading their really helps... I hope this was helpful. =/ I myself am not very experienced, so yeah
