Your design is 100% made by you so it's original content and you, as the artists, have the full right to sell it BUT it is still profiting off of an already existing
brand and infringing on potential markets that should technically be exclusively reserved for the owner of the, possibly copyrighted name and brand. Since you're the only one making profit off this the band has the full legal right to sue you if they see fit. Redbubble doesn't regulate or control their user-submitted designs so the site is a literal cesspool of bootleg merch.
I would advise you to get in contact with Modest Mouse and ask them if they'll be up for collaborating with you and making some official merch or dropping the idea completely and just selling the design without the name. Just for security's sake.
Selling shirts is easy but getting out of a legal hassle is not.

they're quite a popular band so dont really think they'd be able to get back to me in any way :'0 i might end up just taking it down, it's not worth the hassle.

People constantly get tattoos of the balloon thing on We Were Dead Before We Even Sank in their name and some Youtube videos containing their music are monetized, but I wouldn't risk it.

well, it wasn't initially made for a profit at all. i just wanted to buy a modest mouse shirt but everything i saw online was made by other redbubble artists so i couldn't support them by buying a shirt even if i wanted to, so i just designed one for myself and decided to make it public in case anyone liked the design too and wanted to buy it. not to mention the profit id make is so incredibly tiny that it wouldn't make a difference at all.

Your intentions are fine. You're not gonna getΒ prosecuted for making something for your own personal use and enjoyment and
you'll probably won't even get sued by selling some of it but it's a commonΒ precaution to take when it comes to fiddling with brand names and copyright.
It's tricky and while the chances of you actually getting so much as a fine are low it's still a reason as to why some conventions have a "no selling of fan-art allowed" policy.
It's original work, it's not wide-spread sale, the risk is low BUT it's always better to stay on the safe (legal) side of things.
Lol nobody's going to demonize you for making some shirts with a cool design!
