Description Full Title: An Introduction To Collective Memory

I finally came up with a proper title for this piece. This is a layout of how the piece looks as a whole. Sorry, my old tarp is the only thing I had as a backdrop. It is now hanging up on my girlfriend Amy's wall.

Standard process: mixed media assemblage using misc. cardboards, misc. clippings from magazines and books, copper sheet, papers, sketchings, glue, frames bought at a thrift store, acrylic paints, and of course a lotta love.

Going left to right, with exception of the large middle one, which is last:
Frame 1, Frame 2, Frame 3, Frame 4, Frame 5, Frame 6, Frame 7, Frame 8, Frame 9

It's actually a very interesting collage. I like the muted colours and the fact that while each is it's own distinct entitiy, the whole works well together. The frames themselves are also rather antique looking and the age adds to the whole idea of memory. I like it.

There's a very nice sense of unity within these combined pieces. The frame style and the style of the paintings are all very consistent. They work together perfectly . Now, I like things symetrical, and I would of put the two round frames across from each other, buuuuuuuut you arranged them for your girlfriend and if she likes them that way they're just fine with me .

patternsinthestatic In reply to Mushroomboy5 [2006-04-13 21:10:15 +0000 UTC]

haha well i difinitely have issues with symmetry... this actually bothers me sometimes because i think it's too symmetrical, hehe. but it's a little less noticable in person, so i'm cool with it. and just for the record, i made the artwork independent of her. i chose the placement of the frames and the content in them. i just had her room in mind. she did help pick out the frames, but that's about it.

but thanks! i like hearing that it's unified, because that's what i was going for.

what a beautiful work. i faved this ensemble view but each one of them is a great piece. you really chose the right way to presents those images. i like the great amount of details and the texture work in those pieces. they are like faded memories in frames from another time.

I was gonna ask you on one of the other shots whether you'd got the frames from a thrift store - I thought so, they've got that lovely used look about them, which is really nice. Its good to see how the old frames and the new art work so well together - and kudos to you for doing something so nice for your girlfriend!

patternsinthestatic In reply to undividual [2006-03-20 17:41:50 +0000 UTC]

yeah, there's this really great antique store near me that was going out of business, so me n Amy grabbed all the small frames there for 50% off. i also bought this illustrated girl scout handbook from 1947 there. used it in places. i'm sad the store is gone now...i think they moved, but i don't know where. oh, and the frames didn't really look that way when i bought them. i treated them with paint to age them even more and to tie in with the pieces inside and the group as a whole. thanks for the comments

undividual In reply to patternsinthestatic [2006-03-20 19:29:17 +0000 UTC]

There's a store like that near me, except its a very pretentious one, and everything costs loads, so I've never been in... we really do need a proper old fashioned antique store... I'm getting a bit sick of Ikea...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

patternsinthestatic In reply to undividual [2006-03-20 20:29:29 +0000 UTC]

ha, IKEA?! no good for my grungy look. But yeah, that's the thing with antique stores, they really have the same quality of stuff thrift stores have, but they actually enjoy collecting junk, so they charge double the price. That's why we were so glad to get those frames at 1/2 off. It put them down to the price I'd normally pay at a thrift store.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undividual In reply to patternsinthestatic [2006-03-21 17:19:19 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha! I'm now contemplating the possibility of trying to 'antique look' an ikea chair like [link] with some sandpaper, cold tea and matches... for that proper 'vintage look'... it might work... possibly...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

patternsinthestatic In reply to undividual [2006-03-21 17:37:13 +0000 UTC]

hmm the problem with that stool is that it's already shaped in a modern way... it might be hard to make it look antique-ish... you could maybe make it look '50s-ish by like painting the seat butter yellow or mint green or something. do you already own that stool?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undividual In reply to patternsinthestatic [2006-03-21 17:42:50 +0000 UTC]

XD Yeah, I was being ironic... but I would agree with you about the 50's thing... either light pastelly colours, or some of that awesome gingham print sticky back plastic I've seen somewhere...
I don't own it, but my current desk chair is falling to pieces, and since that only costs about £6, I think it's within my price range

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

patternsinthestatic In reply to undividual [2006-03-21 18:01:22 +0000 UTC]

you want a stool as a desk chair? eww, haha, talk about no back support... lol sticky back plastic... so tacky. i love it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undividual In reply to patternsinthestatic [2006-03-21 18:31:38 +0000 UTC]

My current desk chair is: [link] which is one of the most weird things you can imagine to sit on... its kind of... contoured to your arse!
I would get another one of those, but the wheels on it keep breaking, so there's no point buying another one, because it seems to be a fatal design flaw. Methinks I'm gonna go for the cheap, customisable stool option!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

patternsinthestatic In reply to undividual [2006-03-21 19:28:25 +0000 UTC]

haha, well it seemed unbelieveable before, but it does appear you'd be upgrading to buy that other stool. lol, that red thing reminds me of a fire engine...stool...of some sort... or a fire hydrant... lol.
