I'm not fond of the "whites" in the piece but everything else is superb. Great textures in the background and on the man. The color shceme is awesome, lovethe hint of red. Love the architectures on the side & the head too! Fabulous manip job!

thanks man. a few things i love - textures, warm colors, arhitecture, and faces. glad you like them too. the whites are still controversial... i myself am torn as are my watchers.

Aww , looks like the poor guy could use some aspirin.
Well, anyway, this caught my eye while browsing through your gallery and I've been staring at it for close to 10 minutes. So much is going on (some could argue maybe a little too much), but I have to say this is very VERY well put together. I'm especially loving the color scheme and the grittiness to it. Very intense piece.

Thanks upon thanks! That's exactly the kind of reaction I love to get from my art, the staring at it, analyzing all the details... I tend to look at my work very close when I work on it, whether its paint or digitally, so it's best viewed in the detials as well. Thanks for taking interest!

the manip is nice.. i like the head.. but i'm not sure about the white parts, quite out of range..

patternsinthestatic In reply to motionstudy [2006-02-13 17:57:04 +0000 UTC]

yeah i've got that from people. part of the reason i did those windmills is that in the picture the man's hand was cut off at a straight line. that was my way of sort of covering that up. but also, the white parts looked better when i printed it up with a white border, cuz then they just became extensions of the outside shape. i'm gonna resubmit this one with white border and see what you all think then.

do u remember in wat kind of mood when u came up with this piece. how do u actually work.. do u kinda wing it or plan it out with a few drawings? its interesting to know how ppl work.. usually when i do something i have it in my head and i work to try and produce a near version of it.. however my teachers complained back in high skool. lol. oh yeah well im not literally a tan person lol.. i like the colour.. im more along the lines of just asian lmao.

I don't remember exactly what I was feeling at the time I made this... Sometimes it is affected by what I'm feeling, sometimes it's just dictated by the images that I found. Although, see, when I'm scouring my own databases and those of photos.com, the stock photography site i used to have a subscription to, I do tend to pick out the real emotional ones that are sad or lonely or angry or something. Maybe it's my hidden feelings coming out or something... All my art tends to be overtly introspective. I can't really help it. I NEVER have a real plan before I start. I've tried planning and it screws up everything. My art is always dictated by the pieces that make it up and the flow of the whole process. I usually don't even know what it's all about till way after the fact. I like getting people's input cuz it helps me figure it out.

photo.com! hehe i remember that site when we were told about it in photoshop class. handy but i couldnt find anything i wanted.. that is the dissapointing bit of having a image of wat u want.. coz nothing looks just rite! lmao annoying. but yes. peoples input is always a great help.. i mean its better than sitting there and brainstorming..

patternsinthestatic In reply to bananalicious [2005-12-22 08:19:39 +0000 UTC]

oh, well, i definitely invested quite a bit of time scouring (and i do mean scouring) that site to find the few nuggets of gold in the pile of crap. it's the cheapest stock site for a reason. but good stuff does exist on there. its just the searching/sorting methods are really stupid on that site. it's 250 bucks for 3 months of unlimited downloads, when at veer.com (a simply amazing site, probably the best out there) the images can be around $250 each! or you can buy a pack of 50 for like $800.

but most hardcore designers will tell you to take your own pictures. they're more original and you can do whatever you want without having too spend forever looking for it. personally, i got that subscription for free from my work. so i used it. it's expired now though, dang it.

oh my gawd!!! 250 FOR A PICTURE??!! man.. i guess it is wat u pay to find a good quality image with no copywright. lol i would prefer to take my own pictures also.. but.. not having a digital camera is a problem >.<" but i shall change that soon, mayb get one next year. i mean since im doing a fine art majour i think it would b a good idea to get a digital camera to keep track of my work and etc. i like photoshop.. its a fun programme to use, only did 3 photoshop images this year...one of them is the desktop feature i have.. lol. random thing really. i think it would also b kool to use both traditional and digital mediums for my art.

I'm loving this!
It has a perfect mixture of simplicity in the designs and business in the overall piece.
The only thing I could suggest at all would be to use a different pattern for his face, it seems very intrusive and doesn't blend well.
Other than that, it's amazing!!
great job darling

patternsinthestatic In reply to deepdarkness [2005-11-11 19:54:19 +0000 UTC]

thank you once again for a simply delightful comment! this one was a real challenge for me because i'm not used to working so big and i was limited by smaller images to use. it was really hard not to make it look sectioned off and choppy. as far as the pattern on his face, well, i'm a sucker for texture and i liked the idea that his face was rusting and peeling off... maybe it was too harsh? i could have toned it down, but, well, i'm an intense guy... what can i say?

I have to say.
The more I see your art, and the more I come to understand how you work (though that is VERY little at this point) the more and more intriguing you become.
and apparently, the worse and worse my ability to spell becomes..

patternsinthestatic In reply to deepdarkness [2005-11-11 23:30:55 +0000 UTC]

uhh havent noticed any spelling problems... but thanks.

i actually haven't been doing too much photoshop lately. besides stuff for classes, i haven't done ANY art on the computer this semester. I've been getting into assemblage, trying to translate some techniques i use on the computer to a tactile surface. i've been thinking about posting some of those pieces, but i know most people have me on their friends list for my digital art. and i also have to get some quality pics taken of the paintings first.

Really cool. I agree w/ Mizuu about the wind turbines, they might be less pronounced if rendered in a white half-tone(what I'm specifically imagining is a screen of white dots of about 50% density, maybe somewhat transparent as they become smaller)just a thought, and as usual it comes with the "It-sounds-cool-but-it-might-actually-look-like-ass" disclaimer, especially now that I remember the thing about the hand.

About file size: most of my originals are also about 3k pixels on their longest side, but 23 layers? You must either have a badass processor... or a time machine?

PS. If you do have a time machine...I got next!

patternsinthestatic In reply to Propagandroid [2005-09-13 05:48:34 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I agreed with you guys about the white shapes until today. I printed it up and it actually looks pretty nice when the white of the page shows through. the negative space actually takes on one shape.

lol, no time machine, sorry. wish i had one myself. could be handy. Yeah, it does take forever to load the PSD file when I open it. but after that, it runs fine. I use a G4 Powerbook.

Propagandroid In reply to patternsinthestatic [2005-09-13 06:01:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there is always a difference between seeing a print and seeing an image on a screen.

My PC does everything pretty quickly; except TWAIN capture (this is the software that delivers the scan data when I import from my scanner into PS), which can take minutes sometimes.

The white elements (beside the bird) are too distracting.
And another life lesson by Mizuu :
There's an idiom in Polish like "mieć cały dom na głowie" (lit. "to have a whole house on one's head"). It means you're the scapegoat of the family and you have to do all the chores remember about all the bdays, an basically pay interest to what happens in your family and what do tax-guys want from you. After this picture it gets another dimention, don't you think?

(BTW I like to comment on your work)

patternsinthestatic In reply to mizuuko [2005-09-10 18:52:59 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i kind of agree with you on the white things... see, the picture of the man was cropped at the hand. so i had half the hand missing. i put the white elements there to mask that, and they kind of grew to their own thing. still not sure how this piece works...

wow, i really like that insight! that does give this piece a different meaning. thanks for sharing that.
