Description
"Pulled Together" "Time to shine" "Square Knot"One in a series of nine framed elements that, when grouped together, make up An Introduction To Collective Memory. Actually, this is the first piece I did. After completing this one, we had the idea to do a whole group around it. I made the others and modified this one to make sure they all fit together. They are hanging on my girlfriend Amy's wall above her bed in her newly redecorated room.
Standard process: mixed media assemblage using misc. cardboards, misc. clippings from magazines and books, copper sheet, papers, sketchings, glue, frames bought at a thrift store, acrylic paints, and of course a lotta love.

Heh, that's funny... I call it "art" too! What a marvelous coincidence!
Actually it's on my wall right now with the other pieces that make up the whole. You see it right when you walk in the door; it's cool. And if I ever sold this piece (which I don't think I will), it would definitely go with the other frames as one unit.
Glad you like it.

Very nice, I love the collage. One thing I would like to say is that I appreciate that this a real & tangible piece, and that you created it with your hands. So many people try to do this in photoshop and it just comes out forged and meaningless. I really like the bottom photo of the man peering up at the rest of the composition. The only thing I feel this is missing is a stronger focal point, I think if any 1 object of the collage was pristine and stood out from the rest it would make it more obvious where the eye should start.

Thanks so much for the insightful comment and critique. Seems like creating a focal point is somewhat of a weakness in my collage work. It's odd because I'm always very concious of focal points and visual importance in my graphic design work, but when I'm working with my hands my mind works differently. Either that or there's just no 'undo' button. Either way, that is something I can be working on. Thanks.
I'm glad you like this! I do enjoy getting my hands dirty in these pieces. Like you said, it's more "real and tangible" sitting on a tarp on the floor cutting out pieces, gluing them on, tearing them off, working with paints, mixing the colors I need... there's more value in the process. And that's where it collects meaning in my own mind. In other words, my physical pieces are worth more to me than anything done on the computer.

thanks.
it's a combo of a Death Cab For Cutie lyric and a Bright Eyes lyric.
it's just something that's been with me for a while. static. in some contexts i am the static, in more recent concepts i have been in or among static. it's a long story. actually, its the story of my stifled, emotional, unoriginal suburban life.

wow, thats so deep, even when you know its deep, you never know how deep it goes.
and its a story you have triumphantly been overcoming(at least in your art) in my eyes.

Are those windmills part of the image with the man looking up? They make an awesome footer.

Oh yeh also the "Time to shine" seems kinda ironic, as the guy looks like hes falling (shot maybe). Alternatively he could be looking up at the woman. I like the corrugated cardboard too

yeah i have a small love affair with corrugated cardboard... love the texture and patterns it creates. and interesting you see the guy as falling... i see him as rising, or at least looking up as if to rise. any perspective is welcom though, i like hearing input.
