Description
This one's for those of you who miss my old digital art. It's actually a piece I did last semester, just hadn't posted it yet. This is a mock 2 page spread of a magazine, showing the intro pages to an article on the growing trend of "Maximalism" in design. I designed it with Maximalist ideals in mind to illustrate the point. if you're not familiar with Maximalism, check it out. Some pretty sweet stuff comin out of this new trend.Related content

its takes time, but it's pretty fun! wish i could refer you to a good place to research maximalism, but there really isn't one aside from the book mentioned above (which my girlfriend just bought for me!)

i tried to find out what maximalism in design means, and i found a few examples. i'm not sure if i understand it right, though i think i feel what it is and what the most important elements of maximalism are.
the visualisation of the word Β«decadenceΒ» with the letters which are falling apart is brilliant, in my opinion the best thing of the whole page..

yeah, when you look it up, you don't find much more than just examples, and even those examples are varied. my main source for this piece was a book titled "Maximalism: The Design of Decadence in Excess" (or something real close to that). It was my friend's book that she let me borrow. i'd really like to go find it somewhere, but the cover price is $40. I think it's the only book on maximalism out there.
And thank you about the word "decadence". I had fun with that.

looks good. i havent heard maximalism, although i did know what you meant right away [before reading what you said...]
i like maximalism art as well. as long as it is neat and not just thrown together for the sake of being posted...
nicely done!

yeah, some people just abuse the idea. even in excess there has to be good taste.
thanks! XD

Very nice layout! Color choices are perfect. I love the offset on the left contrasting with the straight text on the right. This piece also has really great depth, I have a hard time getting that in my digi layouts! Wonderful! Brandi

*takes a bow* why thank you. and YOU have wonderful art school terminology, haha.
interesting about the color scheme, since 2 of 2 comments have mentioned it, i really had a hard time with it at first. i completely changed it 3 or 4 times during the creation of the piece. I dunno what i was thinking, i had white and purple and black and who-knows-what. Actually, I know what I was thinking: I had been looking at so many examples of the style so i could try to emulate it that i got wrapped up in all the other people's styles. A lot of the ones i looked at were all psychadelic and colorful and i think i was trying to copy that. Finally i had to just scrap all that and go with my own color scheme. I went with the browns i tend to favor so much lately and *boom* it came together!

Sometimes the work we have the hardest time with seems to come out as our best! I have actually seen several works that were wonderful using brown. I think the natural colors make a very nice accent colors, kind of tones down the brightness of other colors just a bit for a softer layout! Brandi

yeah... i hadn't really put my thoughts into those words before, but that's totally true. lol, i just knew i liked earth tones and accent colors. didn't really give it much more thought than that. thanks for that bit on insight!

thank you. the major emphasis of the movement is that decoration and richness of design take a precadence over most other things, even if you have to sacrifice a "quick read". usually, i have to focus on whether or not the viewer will have an easy time of interpreting the information, but here i got to just go crazy. I guess the viewer loses an easy read, but gains interest just by the nature of it's complexity.

You know, I think I would like that. If teaching at a collegiate level didn't require so much darn schooling, I'd really seriously consider going out for an art teacher eventually. In classes, I'm constantly thinking of how I could do things differently and better or how to handle critiques more effectively. But, yeah, I'm only goin as far as my bachelor's and maybe I'll go out for teaching accreditation, but that's only good for, what, up to high school?
