Did the filter take most of damage? Looks like there's a filter.

that's really painful to see. Did you get it checked and calculated the repair cost?

Yeah, That hurt! The repair costs are high and the quality of repair will not be good, based on past experience.

That's just your UV filter (what - you think we can't tell the difference?) - stop whining...lol

If you must drop your lenses, buy Nikon - they can take it...

You are good! That is the UV filter, but you can feel the problems in the performance of the lens. The zoom ring is tight as hell now. It's internal damage.

You are right about Nikon. I still have and use my Nikon D70. (it's a million years old) It's solid, durable, and still works. The Nikkor lenses I have are amazing.

I have already gone through 3 Canon camera bodies and 2 Canon lenses. Nikon is definitely a more durable product.

It might be just a matter of having it serviced - I've brought back from the dead several lenses that looked as though they were toast.
The lens groups will be sealed units that are moved by the focus ring and zoom ring, so it may not be as bad as you fear...might just be an alignment problem.
Of course if the lens barrel is damaged it's still not too bad as the undamaged element groups can be put into a new barrel.

The main issue is cost - all that takes time and time = money. If the lens is 'very' out of warranty, I wouldn't bother with Canon who are notoriously pricey anyway, but would go to a third-party repair shop who may do it a lot cheaper.

Thanks for the feedback/suggestion! I appreciate it!

I have sent Canon cameras and lenses back before. They don't do a good job and are expensive as hell. Maybe a third-party repair shop would do better. I'll look into it.

Didn't have a filter on? I ALWAYS have a filter. Um... including the CPL that hardly turns and is stuck on my 17-200 lens. But hey, my lens survived the fall.

I did have the filter on. All my lenses have them. The damage is more internal. I think the filter helped in preventing greater damage though.

oooouuuuuuuuuutchhhhh!!! the good thing is that it can be fixed, and the seals replaced, but it's a pro job.

PavSys In reply to Cyclops22 [2012-03-18 16:28:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that hurt! But I think I will manage.

If you have ever had a lens or camera repaired, they don't really do a good job.

yup - my viv 19-35mm suffered after a drop - focus ring has a hitch around 30-32mm.

walker201 [2012-03-18 02:26:12 +0000 UTC]

can it be fixed or will you have to buy another one?

PavSys In reply to walker201 [2012-03-18 03:14:27 +0000 UTC]

The crack can be repaired, but the zoom ring is tight to turn now and the internal seals may be damaged. Only time will tell if it will hold up. That was such a damn good lens.
