Description
Allosaurus is a great terror among the many herbivores of the Morrison. It is a powerful ambush predator, capable of large bursts of speed for a limited amount of time; this allows it to burst out into the open and fell prey its size. Allosaurus’ hunting method consists of rushing towards a large herbivore, biting a large chunk of flesh out of its flank, and waiting for it to bleed out before finishing it off with a deadly bite. Much like Komodo dragons, Allosaurus will form loose mobs consisting of 2-6 individuals in order to bring down gigantic herbivores or feed on carcasses. Feeding works on a hierarchy, with the larger allosaurs feeding first and the smaller ones lower in the pecking order; in fact, Allosaurus often fight, kill, and eat each other during feeding. Interestingly, both male and female Allosaurus are able to flush blood into their large, horn-like crests; this can be used for intimidating would-be-attackers into running away. Juvenile Allosaurus, vulnerable to adults as well as other predators, have proportionally longer legs than adults; this allows them to run away from any potential threat, as well as to chase down many small prey items such as Othnielosaurus.
