Description Thrown and altered charcoal fired stoneware cone 11+~

High fired stoneware. "Charcoal fired" refers to a firing process developed by Philip Cornelius [link] in which wares are dry stacked in a kiln without shelves, fired to cone 11+. Mesquite charcoal is introduced to the kiln at cone 8 and 11. The goal is to reproduce the surface effects of a wood fired kiln, but in the convenience of a gas kiln.

This piece is called "Raku" <>
(the Chinese character carved into the surface) 楽 means "easy" or relaxing in Japanese.

I must confess, as a whole I hate raku. I think that a large reason is because people seem to be so in love with the process of it that they neglect to examine whether or not it is the most appropriate surface treatment for a piece.

This piece however, is an example in which raku actually adds to the strength of the piece rather than feeling like an unrelated experiment. Bravo.

I couldn't agree more. Well said. Personally, I'm really turned off by the wooden tone of raku ware, fracture ware.

Thanks for the comment, but please see the update to the description of this piece.

is the clay still vitreous enough at cone 11 to take in the carbon from the smoke?

Do you mean porous? We'd put in charcoal at around cone 8 and cone 11. I think the carbon trapping happened at around cone 8. Then at 11 for ash melt.

sorry, yea, I meant "is it too vitreous", so yea, is it pourous enough.

But the fact that you added it at cone8 answered the question anyway.

Interesting technique, I'll have to try it out.

Thanks, 99% of the coloring and surface effect came from the firing process. I did cheat a little after and painted the bricks red a bit with oils.
There are 3 little houses on the mountain too.
