Description
Inspired by: "Dark Intelligence"I was going to post a picture of Peabody Demoman forcing Peabody Pyro to drink 21 bottles of scrumpy today, but I think this will work much better.
Been a while since I've uploaded anything new to deviantART. Even longer since I've uploaded anything from Garry's Mod. Even longer since I've uploaded anything related to Metroid. And even longer than that since I've uploaded anything featuring Samus Aran front and center.
And that was... a rather unimpressive shot of Zero Suit Samus getting stalked by a Xenomorph . Come on, I can do better than that! In fact, I have done better than that! Remember Samus Aran versus Xen Tentacle ? That one was awesome! Unfortunately, it's also a compressed JPEG without maximized video settings. Therefore, I felt the need to show Varia Suit Samus kicking alien butt again, but this time, with maximized video settings and no JPEG compression.
What better way to do that than to use Super Smash Bros. for Wii U's fancy new HD models for Samus Aran and her arch nemesis, Ridley?
Yes, I know. The Zero Suit model used for Samus's face is from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This is because the current version of Smash U's Zero Suit Samus has the same lifeless face as a plastic Barbie doll, with no faceposing to boot.
Fine, let's address the elephant in the room. Yes, Samus and Ridley's Smash U designs are modeled after Other M, and there's a particularly infamous scene in that game involving Samus and Ridley. This ended up influencing how this picture turned out. Originally, I wanted Samus to be pointing her arm cannon at Ridley, but I just couldn't get a good compromise between the pose I envisioned and the camera angle I wanted. As a result, Samus's back ended up being turned towards Ridley in this picture, and, with her expression masked behind her visor, I feared that this might suggest the idea that she was scared, cowering, running away from Ridley rather than fighting him. That is why I chose to take off her helmet and reveal her face.
Why? So that the viewer can plainly see that Samus is not scared. She's pissed off. And, as soon as she turns around, she's going to fire a dozen missiles and plasma beams down Ridley's throat until she has killed him for the umpeenth time.
Took about two hours in GMod to make this, not counting the time I wasted when first trying to start up this project (as well as trying to find a map big enough to accommodate Ridley's size because RIDLEY IS TOO BIG) only to accidentally crash the program. Had some fun trying out different lighting effects to get the right dynamic feel. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the result.
This was actually something I've spent quite some time in GMod practicing for. You can see this in the screenshots I've been uploading to my Steam Gallery, such as learning how to pose Samus's hair with the Advanced Bone Tool; using the Advanced Inflator to make a helmetless Samus ; and practicing posing Ridley's Other M model . You may even notice that Ridley's pose in that screenshot is nearly identical to Ridley's pose here.
Speaking of Ridley, one of the things that held me back from actually doing this was the fact that, at the time, the Other M model was the only available GMod model for Ridley (not counting Omega Ridley because OMEGA RIDLEY IS EVEN BIGGER), and... let's be honest, that model (especially the textures) leaves a lot to be desired. It looks fine on the Wii, but, for some reason, the act of porting it to Source really made it look crummy. Fortunately, Ridley's Smash U model was recently ported... to Source Film Maker. Once again, GMod has gotten the short end of the stick. But, thanks to the console command prop_dynamic_create, it is possible to import some SFM models into GMod and pose them using the Advanced Bone Tool or Joint Tool. It's a pain in the neck and I can't wait until GMod gets the cool toys that SFM has, but with enough practice you can have some fun with a model before the rest of the GMod community gets their hands on it.
Metroid and Super Smash Bros. belong to Nintendo. Half-Life 2 belongs to Valve. Garry's Mod belongs to Garry Newman.

You don't. Not as far as I know, at least.
I created the helmetless Samus by shrinking down Samus's helmet, shrinking down Zero Suit Samus's body, and positioning the latter's head above the former's body. It's a crude method, but it works.

You're definitely getting the hang of posing these dynamically and impressively. And a clever use of EP1 maps for the set-up here.
I would advise toying more with effects here. A bit of DOF on the background (though admittedly it's hard to work with when you're trying to emphasize foreground and background character), some extra fire effects, and some lamps for dynamic lighting, and this could look even more impressive.

Thanks for the feedback!
As you can see here for comparison, the addition of lamps, lights, and some post-processing (not to mention maximized video settings) can definitely make a huge difference in presentation. Still trying to get the hang of what works best, though. Some additional lamps that I had set up were ultimately disabled because they made the lighting look too unnatural or lost certain shadows I liked, but I'm sure that, with more practice, I can find that cinematic quality we're aiming for. I did try to add DOF, but as you said, it was problematic trying to work with a character in the foreground and a character in the background.
