Description
This is an old drawing that I was thinking of tossing but decided to finish instead (special thanks to Nekomarunosuke for making me think of this old piece when he drew Chaka here !). I originally drew this around mid-2016, inked it in parts over the next couple years, then finally colored it over the past week or so. This is my first time coloring Chaka since I learned to shade with environmentally cohesive non-local color, and it turns out her red-orange fur does NOT play nice. I spent a lot of time modulating Chaka's palette to accommodate the atmospheric colors of the environment without losing her base colors. I wish you could see the true colors because, in spite of the challenge, I think the coloring came out quite well!Fun facts about the coloring:
Prismacolor inking pens, Prismacolor markers, orange Staedtler Triplus Fineliner pen, Cachet Studio drawing book paper (approx. 6.5 x 10 inches).

I can't really think of anything to say that hasn't already been said by other users. But I guess another compliment, even though redundant, won't hurt. This is very nicely done. Love the scenery and the character looks funny and dynamic (weird fingers though O_o ). As you said to me recently: keep up the great work ;D

Thanks for taking the time to comment and fav. I appreciate that.
Her hands are one of my least-favorite parts of the design and I've been wanting to experiment with other approaches. Maybe go more hoofy, less fingery.

My pleasure.
About the hands... Personally, I'd probably just get rid of those tips and go for normal, i.e. human hands. On the other hand (no pun intended), making them more hoof-like as you said could work as well... at least for the appearance. Now, regarding practicality (i.e. the ability to grab things) the hoof-variant might not be the best choice. Maybe just give her normal hands and color the finger tips differently..? I don't know. Guess you'll have to try different versions and see which one works best.

Thank you. The scenery was intended to be the same area as Pale Rock Valley Β (which was inspired by a certain area in southern California), but up on the rim. I think my original vision back in 2016 included showing more expansive scenery looking down into the valley, but since this languished in WIP status for years I went with something more simple.

I'm glad you accomplish to draw this art, I'm really love this character. when I see this art in the first time, the first impression is different from my expectation. before I see the ink art once and then I pay much attention to the steep incline and her pose, and I think it affect to the character's motion and atmosphere, and the art have much speed feeling. it's my feeling, the steep slope remind me of the speed scene. this art, I feel the stable and powerful mood much, Chaka can walk up and down the steep slope easily, the Chaka's motion looks dynamic.
I love her pose, and I notice her left elbow is noticeable, the many other objects have round lines, her hairs and tail, the roundish leaves and the tree, placed on the right and it's as if make the space of showing Chaka's elbow much with curving outline, so I feel the line variation and the strong motion from her pose.
on the background effect, I've seen this coloring taste from your very old arts and I'm really love this soft effect. and this effect make to tell the landscape environment, I feel the soft bright color is the autumn soft sun light, and the blue color is the deep place, not many sun light reach to there, and it show some part of the cold air of the early winter.
and I'm astonished this art don't use many type of the colors, it's orange, red, brown like autumn color, and the blue and indigo, and these colors make the abundant color effects. I feel using the different type of color for shading, and making black color from blending other colors make the more attractive color. I really love this art.

Wow, thank you so much for writing this awesome comment and for adding my artwork to your favs. I really appreciate that. I'm glad you like Chaka. I had forgotten how hard she is to draw and color! I changed her hair to being all black (maybe slightly redder at the end) with a blue bead, and I like how it looks.
Maybe the expectation from the work-in-progress was really different from the final drawing because they were years apart. I think my original idea for the colors involved a lot of green because I'm comfortable coloring with green. But instead I decided to focus on pale yellow and blue and that changed everything - I colored the sky first and suddenly green looked awful, so I switched the tree to orange and brown. I picked a more pale, cool shade for Chaka's orange fur to go with it. An autumn mood was created as a happy accident.
I love diagonal angles in my artwork. The running pose was because, all of my recent anthro artworks before it were characters in sitting poses. That's why it was a "much-needed run"!

I'm amazed the first plan on this art is full of the green colors, and change to autumn art accidentally, but come to think of it, it like thing happen to me many times, I often change the plan on coloring, and on the rainbow colored background art, there are no plan, I see the art and I put what I want to use. when I color the art, I pay attention to my mood, and if I feel it's not good, or it's not fun and exciting, I change the way.
this art is great autumn art, the Chaka's autumn color and the autumn background color make the autumn atmosphere, I love it.

Usually I have a strong idea for the background and the color mood when I begin to draw, but too much time passed while working on this artwork. I think the coloring came out better than it would have been if I had finished it quickly with the original plan. Apparently I needed a little autumn in my life right now. So glad you like it too!
