When I had sat down, Fang sat down next to me. He took my hands in his and laid them on my lap.
“Max,” he began, “I think you are getting signals from me I don’t want to give you. They’re completely false. Max, I don’t know how many times I’ve told you this before but, I love you. I love you more than I could possibly love anyone or anything at any given time.”
I felt tears roll down my cheeks, but I knew these were of happiness.
“Max,” Fang continued, “I want to tell you a story. The story of us, from my point of view. When we first met, I knew I was different. Even though we all had wings, I was quiet, negative and sarcastic. I didn’t think I’d ever like you. Sure, you were brave and strong, and I knew that, but you were also happy-go-lucky and optimistic. At least, I thought you were,” Fang corrected, under the intensity of my gaze. Happy-go-lucky and optimistic?
“But I watched you, a lot,” Fang carried on, “and I found that I couldn’t help but stare when you were just learning to fly and jumping high in the air. I couldn’t help but think of how graceful you looked, and how beautiful you looked with your wind-blown cheeks, smiling huge because you’d just flown. I couldn’t help but smile a little to myself when you grinned.
“Max, I convinced myself I was the survivor of the group. If worst came to worst, and you guys were to have been killed by Erasers, I would have been able to move on. I would have been able to live in the wild on my own, if need be. I was the loner of the flock, and I always knew it.
“But you proved me wrong, way wrong. I didn’t want to want you, Max. I didn’t want to need you so bad. I didn’t want to wake up, to find that I was falling so fast. I didn’t want to need you; I didn’t want to need anyone. Now look what you’ve done. I can’t go on without you, Max. I’m not strong without you.
“Max, I’m going to make you a promise.” He squeezed one of my hands. “This hand that I’m holding? I will never let go. I swear to you on my life. If I ever let go, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. Do you understand that I need you for my very existence?”
I nodded, feeling the tears coming out in sobs again.
Iggy walked into the room at that moment. “Are we ready to go?” he asked impatiently.
Fang hesitated. “Actually—"
“Yes we are,” I answered confidently, suddenly feeling very beautiful in the old gray sweatshirt.
