Description I decided to compare my art by doing the same picture with one program only. Usually I use Paint Tool Sai and Photoshop together, so this was different from usual. Also I decided to lay all of the versions on top of one another and see how it looked merged together (see how well everything lapped with eachother). It didn't turn out too bad merged, honestly. But onwards to the individual pictures and how I feel over all about using each program. (This is just my expierence, yours using these programs may be different. ALSO, I suck at explaining shit.)

MS Paint:

Pros:
  • If you're like me, you'll feel nostalgic and feel like a young child using paint.
  • It's free, and most likely will come with your computer if it's a PC.
  • It has probably the most simple and easiest to learn layout out of all the programs...considering it's a barebones program that's not saying much.
Cons:
  • No fucking layers! Trying to shade without layers and not ruining the line art gets frustrating. I had to constantly copy and paste the line art over the coloring and shading. And don't get me started on trying to line art over the sketch and trying to not ruin the line art while erasing the sketch at the same time...
  • No Pen Pressure Sensitivity, so it's harder to give your photo a nice, cleaner look.
  • Default colors are...not...good. Trying to pick colors and make new colors also didn't feel as good to me. It's just easier to pick colors with Photoshop and Sai's colorwheels, if that makes sense.
  • Good luck trying to blend colors like you would in any other art program. Especially good luck if you're trying to get a good gradient type shading like I tried to do.
  • Very limited tools at your disposle. And very limited sizes and options with your already limited tools.

Photoshop CC:

Pros:

  • Lots of layers and groups with many different opacity settings! Layer styles are also pretty handy to use as well.
  • Lots of brushes and brush customization! Downloading and adding more things to Photoshop is super easy. Also, with the version I have, you can group your brushes and not have everything be a clusterfuck!
  • FILTERS GALORE!
  • Pretty good set of tools for art. My personal favorite is the the Gradient tool. It makes gradient shading much nicer and smoother.
  • Making minor adjustments (such as fixing color hues and what not) is really easy in Photoshop.
  • Pen Pressure Sensitivity!!!
  • I personally see this as a good thing; Constant updates to keep the program working and new features are added a lot.

Cons:

  • When it comes to making clean and crisp line art, the pen tool is the best bet. As far as I'm concerned, there's no way to change the Pen Stability to make cleaner line art lines without the pen tool. As for the pen tool itself...I find it kind of a hassle. Also trying to adjust the size of the pen tool lines and what not is...not easy. Not without potentially ruining anything, that is. On the bright side, there is the shape tool to make places shapes you want much easier.
  • Shading and blending just doesn't feel as right to me. The Smudge tool, no matter how much you adjust it, always somehow makes the picture look more grainy and either blends way too much or too little. And using the blur tool or blur filters can overkill and ruin the flow of shading.
  • It costs a lot of money. If you use CC like me, you'll be paying quite a lot a month just to use Photoshop alone (though you do get other Adobe products with CC, like Premiere and After Effects.)
  • While Sai can load PSD files, Photoshop cannot load Sai files. Which sometimes, (for me anyway), can fuck up how the groups and layers are set up...and then you have to reorganize them back to the way I want it to in Sai and it gets annoying.
  • PS's Layout is probably the most complex and diffacult to learn for beginners.

Paint Tool Sai:

Pros:

  • It has good pen pressure sensitivity, AND stability! If you have shaky hands like me and struggle making good line art, Sai's got you covered with the Pen stabilizer.
  • Or, you can use vector linework layers for line arting. You can edit and adjust the points of the vector, change the width and length, do all sorts of things.
  • The tools for shading and blending in general just feel so much easier to use than in Photoshop. I think it also has to do with the Pen stabilizer not making everything so shaky.
  • You can save and load PSD files on Sai, so that makes working back and fourth MUCH easier. So if you're like me and mostly use Sai but use Photoshop as well, this is a huge life/time saver.

Cons:

  • Unfortunately, the vector linework layers don't have shape options. So if you want to make a perfect circle, you'll have to try and make it yourself. Same with other shapes.
  • While you can use plenty of layers, there are much more limited than in Photoshop. Also, there aren't as many layer opacity settings to work with.
  • There's no text box feature. Even MS Paint has a fucking tool box.
  • Trying to add custom textures for brushes and other stuff is really tedious and inconvienent compared to Photoshop where you just download and add it in to the program.  (So I just had to improvise with the textures and filters I do have for the skin.)
  • It's not free (unless you torrent it).
  • No gradient tool, but it's not as bad here since blending shades and colors here is much better than it is in Photoshop and Paint.
  • There isn't any way to save a transparent image unless you get a torrented version with a transparency mod or have photoshop on hand.

Well that's all I got. I probably sound like an idiot trying to explain all this shit but I tried. I hope you like the picture. Tell me which one is your favorite and least favorite! (My favorite is probably the Sai one, though.)

I own everything here.
