Description
The main problem I had with Jurassic World was the sheer lack of imagination that went into the creature design, and nowhere whas this as painful as in the appearance of the genetically modified super-theropod Indominus rex. It's a big, grey hulk of a dinosaur, much like a Giganotosaurus or Acrocanthosaurus and its main 'special feature', its camouflage ability is barely used in the film. So, inspired by the #buildabetterfaketheropod hashtag on twitter I decided to design my own fictional theropod.Meet Botauromimus imperator! I imagine this dinosaur as stealthy ambush predator, camouflaging itself among the trees in much the same way a bittern hides in reed beds, with its head pointed up and its plumage blending in with the background.

I originally imagined it as being more closely tied to Allosauridae or Carcharodontosauridae, but it's a genetically modified hybrid beast, so how meaningful such a classification would be, I don't know.

Dude, I think you're exaggerating a bit: yeah, Indominus doesn't look too unique, but if it were too alien, moviegoers wouldn't really take it seriously. However, I-rex does still look unique: it looks like a dinosaur that could feasibly exist, but at the same time, its features, like the skull-like head (Which may have been inspired by the V-rex from King Kong), make the thing look like it clawed its way out of Skull Island.
That being said, it is nice that Jurassic World is inspiring people just like the original! This is a really cool-looking dinosaur with a really unique hunting tactic!

I'm sorry, but that's just my opinion. I appreciate that not everyone shares it, and that's perfectly okay. You like what I. rex looks like. Great! No problem! But I still think I. rex looks boring and really ugly. And I say this as someone who, overall, greatly enjoyed watching Jurassic World.
I definitely agree on the V. rex influences being there. I. rex kinda looks like some sort of allosauroid version of V. rex.

You do have a good point there, but I'm optimistic: I-rex was a first step for Universal to see if the concept of hybrid dinosaurs would sell (The Chaos Effect toyline, which did feature hybrids, didn't fare too well), and seeing as people seem to like it, you can bet your ass that the next two Jurassic Park films are going to have more extravagant hybrids.
Note: Honestly, it kind of makes sense for I-rex to look so monstrous: it's supposed to represent how you shouldn't fuck with nature, and that doing so will result in monstrous mistakes of nature.
