Description
My worst tutorial ever!Well, at least you get the point of it.
So many people asked, so here is my polymer clay grape tutorial.
I couldn't find one when I was looking for one online, so I had to wing it and through trial and error came up with this. It's not the best, but at least it gives you some sort of idea on how to get it done.
I am so so SO sorry for the quality of this.
I will redo this and upload a better one at some point.

when you use translucent clay, does it become more translucent after you bake it?

I could possibly use this tutorial for the natural dry clay right?? Plus couldent I use this to make a bigger version of grapes??

You can use these for any scale - just make the grapes larger. It should work with any clay - just following the curing instructions on the clay packet and you should be fine.

What keeps all the little grapes together in the bunch? At the end when you add them to the stem.
Do they just stick to themselves and stay together after you bake them?
I haven't worked with my sculpy clay in a while & have been looking for little projects :3
(I usually just make beads)

They bake and end up sticking together. If you want to make sure they're really, really stuck together, you can put some TLS on the back of them as you stick them on.

Thanks. I'm still tweaking it a little bit, so I might redo this tutorial once I'm completely happy with the new process.

Wow, these are adorable!
Maybe you could like put little brown spots on some places so that they look even more real! And texturing the stem, too. Just suggestions!

Thank you.
I was thinking about that, but I'll need to mess around with it a bit more first so I don't just end up covering half the thing in brown chalk. lol
Once I find a good way of doing it, I'll post something else on how to color them.

Oh yeah that's great! My idea was maybe just diping your toothpick in some chalk and then just press it on the grape before making the bunch.

PepperTreeArt In reply to omnommochi [2012-04-17 01:08:49 +0000 UTC]
Yes, a toothpick would work! It'd be thin enough.
Maybe some very thin liquid paint? But then it might drip. Think I just need to make one big grape and experiment with it.

There's a simpler way of making the grape actually - using an extruder and a blade, then you don't have to roll all those tiny balls.

I'm glad I could be of help; I actually spotted it in a book about making polymer clay miniatures.

It'll certainly save some time since the bulk of this was spent making tiny little grapes.
I think I need to invest in one of those books! They seem really helpful.

Making Miniature Food and Market Stalls by Angie Scarr I would highly suggest. I have yet to find a book that is more helpful.

Not everyone uses an extruder. I think this is a tutorial for people who choose not to use one.

I understand that, but I am a firm believer in working smarter and not harder as well as finding ways to work faster and remove tedium. I was simply mentioning it to the author in case they didn't know, which they did not. There's many different ways of achieving a finished product. This is great if you don't own an extruder.
I didn't say anything was wrong with the tutorial itself; quite the opposite is true

Rae-Lynn In reply to SnowBunnyStudios [2012-04-13 03:57:00 +0000 UTC]
I never claimed you did say anything was wrong. No need to get defensive. I was just raising a point, as you were. It's cool that you taught the author something new. Perhaps, like me, they're from an area that does not sell clay or any of the bits and bobs the more well off clay artists have the luxury of using.

SnowBunnyStudios In reply to Rae-Lynn [2012-04-13 06:19:30 +0000 UTC]
I wasn't being defensive, but you seemed to be insulted by my suggestion. I meant no harm in what I said.
Usually, if you have access to the internet, you have access to any number of tools that can be delivered to your door. You can even use something like a garlic press, which can be purchased at any super market or big box retailer for a reasonable cost, to achieve a similar effect. Most of my sculpting tools, particularly my favorite ones, I have either made myself or were inexpensive to purchase.
I, certainly, am not 'well off' but have simply tried to find creative ways to make sure I can complete the task or effect I need to.

PepperTreeArt In reply to SnowBunnyStudios [2012-04-13 18:52:25 +0000 UTC]
I actually do own an extruder, but I'd never thought to use it like this.
I love when I'm able to gain insight from someone who has more experience than me.
But yes, if you don't have access to one this is another way to do it; a lot slower, but it'll get the job done!

I'm sorry if you interpreted my words as defensive. I did not type them that way, just as fact.
Unfortunately usually is not always the case.

Once cannot read tone in text, as I have done nothing but try and offer suggestion and advice.
And because I know 'usually' is not the same as 'always', that's why I suggested cheaper alternatives.

Exactly, that's probably why you came across as defensive, even when you were not being such.
