The way I would explain the shape of Rebirth's timeline would be akin most likely to that of a wavelength of sound. The original timeline (or "Canon") that is untainted by changes or anomalies is what is considered to be the 'normal' and is represented by a straight line, acting as a point of reference for all offshoots and parallels. The Rebirth universe begins at the 'Cataclysm' or 'Divide' point in which a separate timeline is created from a reaction occurring at the time of the LoC being removed from power and placed under Homura's control, creating 'dissonance' and thus momentarily destabilizing the 'original' universe and creating a secondary timeline which shoots off from and eventually arcs back towards the original timeline it was born from, reacting to the normal timeline as a point of reference to be mimicked and returned to as this 'dissonance' slowly echoes outward and fades away. The secondary timeline (due to this dissonance) is fraught with anomalies, and with each 'pass' through the original timeline at 'intersections'; events synchronize and for a moment the two universes are mirrored but not parallel, with events mimicking their original form before the secondary timeline shoots off into another arc, with each successive arc having less and less 'dissonance' and therefore making its trajectory less and less drastic.

Eventually the secondary universe (Rebirth) will lose enough dissonance that it will hit a point of 'convergence' and it will continue on as if it were normal, but all anomalies it picked up along the way that have persisted will be irreversible, and it will be unable to merge with the original timeline, but attempt to follow it as closely as possible with similar events and consequences possibly being created and occupied by different individuals.
