Photobashing: A friend’s character for a DnD game Sometimes I use references, sometimes I draw from imagination, and sometimes I use photobashing when I want something that looks good and comes together quickly.

I was interested to hear two very different camps on this technique. One saying “That’s tracing! That’s cheating!” another saying “That’s like creating a collage, but with painting, it’s common with concept art and fine.” What was even more fascinating was the following argument that went on over whether or not the drawings could be sold. One group said no, under any circumstances, another said it was ok if I was the owner of the photo, and a third said it was fine as long as the end product was “sufficiently deviated” from the original copyright source.

I personally have a lot of fun doing it. I never intend to be a ‘professional artist’ or whatever, so I’m going to do whatever helps me learn, have fun, and produce the stuff I want to exist. I will absolutely trace your Sonic The Hedgehog OC in MS Paint, change the color of the hair from neon green to neon pink, and not feel bad about it.
