Description

The Land Raider Helios is a variant of the Land Raider heavy tank, designed for long-range artillery support within the confines of built-up areas.

The Helios solves this problem by mounting a Helios Missile Launcher, a weapon like the Whirlwind Multiple Missile Launcher found on the Whirlwind artillery tank. This weapon is mounted onto the hull of a Land Raider. This provides Space Marine forces with close-range bombardment ability, even in the most hotly contested war zone. Mounting the Helios Missile Launcher on a Land Raider chassis gives much larger room to store extra ammunition. In addition, it features more armor to protect the tank from enemy fire.

The Land Raider Helios can also be equipped with a Hyperios Missile Launcher, the anti-air variant of the Helios and Whirlwind Missile Launchers. Because of the sophisticated targeting technology used by the weapon, the Land Raider’s hull-mounted twin-linked Heavy Bolters are replaced with targeting sensors to help aim and target acquisition.

This added firepower, as a cost: The positioning of the launcher and its targeting unit also precludes the use of a pintle-mounted weapon, and this means, without the standard Heavy Bolters as well, that the Helios suffers from the lack of anti-infantry or point defense weaponry. Wise strike force commanders remedy this by assigning Land Raider Crusaders or Redeemers to fight alongside the rare and valuable Helios.

History

The Red Scorpions Chapter of Legio III Phoenix Blades developed the Land Raider Helios.  According to the Chapter's records, they were sent to the Forge World of Helios to repel an Ork invasion as part of the Ullanor Campaign. The sons of Iskander realized they didn't have enough artillery to break the walls or suppress the defenders. Because the Red Scorpions are an independent and insular Chapter, they refused to ask for help from the local Imperial Army units.  The Chapter Master directed his Master of the Forge for a solution. Their response was to convert all twelve Land Raiders into the "Helios" pattern. Together with the Chapter's Whirlwinds, the new Land Raider knocked down the offending walls and ended the siege.

After Ullanor Campaign, this pattern of Land Raider was borrowed by other Legions, most notably 1st,4th,6th,7th,9th,11th,13th,16th, and 18th, Legions. The Land Raider Helios pattern has proven valuable in traversing rugged terrain impassable to the less armored Whirlwind.  Such dangerous war zones include those set within magma seas, fractal crystal forests, and carnivorous jungles.

    Armament

The Land Raider Helios is an uncommon variant of the Land Raider. It is used when a Legion detachment needs extra artillery support that their Whirlwinds cannot provide. In addition to offering long-range fire support and serving as an anti-air platform and assault transport, the Land Raider Helios can engage enemy armor with its Lascannons.

Helios' main armament consists of twin-linked, sponson-mounted Lascannons. While firing missiles, these weapons can provide extensive protection for the vehicle. The Helios can transport Astartes infantry, although its capacity is only half that of a standard Land Raider. It has room enough for six Space Marines in standard power armor or three Terminators.

The Land Raider Helios can equip a Hyperios Missile Launcher to engage enemy aircraft. Also available are Dozer Blades, Extra Armor Plating, Storm Bolters mounted on pintles, a Hunter-Killer Missile Launcher, Xenon Searchlights, and Smoke Launchers.
