Description
Concept of scifi rifle – Box-erLet’s make collection bigger. As I run my way I began prefer organic lines and design in my concepts. I found them more interesting and need some skills to model them. But a lot of people prefer “boxy” design, I know that. Boxy design has good features; they are easier and quicker modeled but they often look too “flat”. It could be a tricky to save in few boxes some believable structure and not to look flat or boring.
Ok. This is my try. Body has boxy style so I invested saved polys into scope. Colorization is between silver and white as I haven’t used it so far.
I did two perspective pictures and one tech drawing. (Each has resolution 1920x1080.)

Box-er perspective 2: [link]

Is it good or bad? Tnx for comments or critics if any.
Bye. Peterku.

While you grip does NOT have to be centered, it is your design after all. You do need enough length for extracting the round from the mag, and feeding it up to the breach. Unless you concoct some sort of double bolt system. Overall, I like the concept, except I would actually go with less outside details, so as to have less possible things to catch or snag. Or smoother curves, corners, etc, and I would definitely get rid of the bars on the front. The hand-guard grips on the front are to spread apart, even if this weapon has no recoil, it's operator needs firm control and grip at all times, under any circumstance. Think Battlefield 4 cover art. I appreciate the difference it shows, compared the to bonier, less realistic, looks like a toy weapons out there.

Once again, you need to think more about internals, not nearly enough space for the feeding/ extraction cycle and the length of pull is way too short. The pistol grip on all bullpup rifles needs to be in the center of the overall length.
That aside, its a beautiful design, very reminiscent of the HK G11 final prototype but it looks unbalanced because of the incorrect position of the pistol grip.
I also strongly disagree with the previous critique, good weapon design is not about bullshit extraneous details and contemporary weapons are the shape they are purely due to function and ergonomics. Almost all projected future designs eg, The Crye rifle concept also used in Avatar are very simple and less cluttered externally. Again, google the heckler and koch G11 to see a very "boxy" design that was decades ahead of it's time in terms of revolutionary engineering.
The model is far from "bland" it takes more courage to stick by a simple and functional design than get dragged into pointless detailing which serves no funtion. One point I somewhat agree with is some folding emergency iron sights would have been a decent functional detail to add in case the main optic is damaged in combat.
Keep up the good work!

I like 3d work and true is that modeling "box"style is not as fun as curves surfaces and it also require no special skills. I never argue when somebody point out some fails in functionality. I'm not in touch with real guns.
I work in metalurgy engineering and now how design is created. there are 2 points I'd like to highlight. In games boxy style is popular. Its easy and quick to done and look stylish.
In real life boxy style (no only gun industry but in all segments) is used these days becuase of price of manufacturing. Its easy to gain few plates of various steel, cut them, bend them, make some profile and weld it together.
But future is in curves. Curves surfaces has much better physical properties how they work with forces inside materials. But machines making these complicated surfaces are still expensive and time consuming. They need years to become standard. Bye

Designs: It looks like a box.. and that's a bad thing. If you're aiming for that big, bulky design, try to draw inspirations from real life weapons. I personally think that a "boxy" gun gains most of it's details from massive amounts of extrusions and mechanical parts (gas tubes, sights, muzzle brakes, trigger groups, carrying handles,...), without those details the guns would looks quite bland.
Try lengthening the barrel, redesign the butt-stock and the grip, and extrude parts of the gun so that it'd be less bland looking, a back-up sight being added would also bring up more details in the back and the front of the gun, details the gun desperately needed.
Modelling: Great modelling with good lighting although textures should be much more detailed, especially with the model being very bland, adding gradient to the texture sheet is a welcoming change.
The bump on the grip looks a bit much, tone it down a bit.

I think your critique is a little unfair. Given, from a purely artistic perspective it isn't adorned with superfluous gadgets and attachments and loose wiring, but I think its "box" nature is partially why it's so cool. It's streamlined, it isn't going to be catching on things, all of its major components are evidently internal- which means durability. Furthermore, what would the addition of iron sights provide? The positioning and tightness of the optic unit to the body of the weapon essentially negates the value of anything else.
As for the modelling: Agreed.

Maybe I just look at things differently but the design just doesn't struck me, it was bland looking and rather unimposing. I personally thought it was lacking in details and so I "recommended" that he tries to look at real life weapons for inspirations.
Also, components being internal don't result in added durability, since most of the damage a gun sustain comes from it's internal operations.
Iron sights usually goes hand-in-hand with scope, with the sights as backup in case bad things happens. You might not know it but even sniper rifles have iron sights, they either comes separately (most dedicated bolt action sniper rifles like the AWM), or integrated into the design (like the Dragunov SVD). I thought the sights into the Boxer might impove it's ascetics, then again, personal opinions...

How do you do these concepts so good? I can never make the guns I draw look this good. Then again, I use pencil and paper to draw. Love the gun though.

Liking the style. Reminds me of the Omolon scout rifles in Destiny, very boxed and versatile. Perhaps you could add some explosive rounds, jazz it up a bit?

This looks awesome. I'm looking into getting in to modeling with 3ds-max, as I have free acses to the program while i'm a student in Calgary. This thing looks like it should be made by tediore, from borderlands. very sleek. GJ, i'd buy one of these if i could. and just hang it on the wall.

Slick Render! It would be cool if in the fore-end you had a swing-out bipod... the new styer scout has one, as did the old FALs.

If I may suggest sir that you make the scope in the same shape as the gun. ( boxy ) it will make the scope very futuristic as well. Just an observation.

Being that at one time i have been in the military, your designs are very realistic and detailed,i would have preferred something similar to this weapon...i.e. not open to the elements...fast easy simple.
The weapon looks balanced assuming the rounds are loaded into the butt of the weapon.....does'nt matter when an individual is firing a weapon in the heat of the moment, one does'nt think of balance....or aesthetics.
As long as it is easy to fire maintain and is accurate,& has a large clip full of ammo....I think your designs are very well thought out, instead of just thrown together like most current weapons in production.

I love the concept of this. It would be great as a loose hip firing close range assault gun. But I notice you've put a scope on, which would suggest you'd need a firmer grip for fine distance aiming. This is usually only achieved by holding the stock against your shoulder for stability; not very comfortable with this design. I know it breaks the concept, but perhaps curve out the back end to groove into a shoulder? Or add a rubber section to allow for this?

I really like it, such conceptions look real future like. Even some people may think it´s boring, it makes sense. Btw a year before i did this [link] what shoud prove how much i like this^^
The old-style scope is cool and didn´t feel displaced, but a holosight or something more future-kind would have a good look to.
See the barrel, looks like energy weapon or something, this gives a little question about the chamber ejection(or whatever the right term is...IF it is this).
Under the line - simply thump up

It looks really awkward and hard to hold. I mean, when you hold onto a pistol the base of your palm is on the back of the grip. This gun doesn't have that. I mean, I suppose you could put it to your shoulder for support, but the butt looks to short to do that and use the scope. I don't know, maybe a sketch of someone shooting it would make it clear to me how this works, but it looks like a mix between a pistol and a rifle that just wouldn't work to shoot.
But then, what do I know about guns?
