Description
I tried to finish my Regent sculpture, but as predicted, I ended up messing him up horribly. So I squashed him and tried to remake him, but while I was sculpting his face, I couldnt get his snout right. D: I kept taking it off and redoing it, but to no avail. So, I tried one last time, and it ended up looking more like Phantom's snout than Regents. So I built up the cheeks more, and it still looked like Phantom. So I made her instead.
I will probably re-attempt Regent later on, but for now, I'm satisfied with how this one turned out.
Her paint looks much better in person.
Pupils and bell are painted with metallic acrylics, everything else was painted matte. I put a gloss coating on her eyes and bell, to make them SHINY! and it ended up looking somewhat iridescent. It looks really neat. :3
Top picture is closest to the actual colors of the paint.
She's about 3 or 4 inches tall.
Hand made with polymer clay, hand painted with acrylics, that hair was a pain to make. |:<
On the whole, it took me about 8 hours.
Straight.
Nonstop.
Yeah.

I always loved to customize my own things, like bags or Skins or such, but is an amazing. Im sorry if these questions have already been asked, but is this type of clay very VERY heavy? I wouldnt mind, but how heavy would it be if you never made this one lighter?
Do you mind if you give me the steps on how you made this? And also, does this type of clay break easily? Is this figure still in good shape today? And also, while you made this, did the clay start to sink or was very soft during the process of making this? And about how long does it take it dry? Is it hard for this clay to merge into other clay? What are bad things to do with the clay (Like I heard adding water to some types of clay is bad, something like that.) Was it hard to get the figure in the correct position to stand/sit? I'm so sorry if this is too many questions, i'm just planning on making a figure for our art project for the end of the year with help and inspiration from you of course. Thankyou.

Ploymer clay isn't that heavy unless your sculpture is made out of nothing but the clay. I typically build a tin foil base and overlay it with the clay. I'm not going to give you the steps, because that's pretty much a tutorial, which I don't do. Plus, it's a lot to explain without pictures. There are lots of clay tutorials on dA you can use.
It depends on how thick you lay your clay that determined how fragile it it, but this kind of clay is a bit softer than ceramic, thus giving it a little more room for abuse, depending.
It doesn't shatter. If it breaks, it comes off in pieces, or simply cracks.
The figure is still intact, yes, but that's because it isn't used as a toy. It sits on a shelf with other things I've made and/or collected, where it can't be broken accidentally.
The kind of clay I use gets soft when you mess with it in your hands, and gets stiff as it cools, but it doesn't become permanent until you bake it in the oven. You can still mold it and recycle it until you bake it.
You shouldn't mix this clay with anything that isn't also oven bake clay. That can cause some problems.
You can add water if you really want to, but since this clay doesnt dry out until baked, there really is no need, except for to make slip, which isnt always needed.
No. I build my figures in the position I want them in from the start, with minor adjustments, as needed.

I didn't know you were a sculptor This is gorgeous. The posing is nice, the details are very smooth, and the two paint types work well. Plus, your sculpture actually looks like the character drawings. I can't seem to get that in my own work. :\ What kind of tools do you use when sculpting?

Hehe, I do sculptures every once in a while. x3
Its not my main thing, tho, obviously.
Aww, thank you~
It took me a long time to get them to look like their drawn counterparts, believe me. YEARS of trying different things, jkdgfbsk
Just a lot of trial and error. D:
Mostly I use my fingers. Sometimes I fill my sculptures with tin foil to lessen the weight and how much clay I have to use. I also use a rubber tip thingy to smooth out things a little more.
I know that's very unhelpful. Maddeningly so, but I have no idea what the individual tools are called. x3;;;

I don't own the idea of curly ears.
You don't have to ask, as long as you arent flat out copying me, I dont care.

ive been wanting to ask you. would this clay be any good for cosplays and props?

PhantomCat In reply to EchoedMemories [2011-12-07 16:07:46 +0000 UTC]
I have no idea.
I wouldnt think so, unless it was just for small things, cause it can be pretty heavy. Or if yoou built it with foil inside. But otherwise, you'd prolly want to go with something lighter, like sculpey ultralight or paperclay.

okay. that makes sense. would it work well with a foam base and a clay cover? or dose it chip easily?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
PhantomCat In reply to EchoedMemories [2011-12-08 12:35:26 +0000 UTC]
Depends if you use air dry or oven bake clay. Foam can melt and/or give off fumes that could be really bad for you to inhale if you put it in the oven. Air dry clay, on the other hand, you prolly could put over a foam base, but it'd be pretty hard since foam tends to be pretty squishy, and air dry clay likes to crumble.Unless you carved a block of styrofoam or flower foam, that could theoretically work pretty well.
Another thing you could try is resin, if you can find it.

Not right now, nope.
I might do it in the future, but last time I tried putting my characters on stuff, it ended in disaster.
AND nobody bought anything. x3
But I've improved a lot since then, so I might try opening a shop on CafePress to make stuff, but idk how well it'd go

this looks really great love the pose and all, 'specially the fact that the pose makes it not just a static figure. Makes me want to attempt sculpting~
