I like shading this way. It takes forever, but it sure does look spiffy~
Drew it a couple weeks ago, but posting it now, cause I want to.
Anatomy fail on the arms, but I don't care that much, since it's just a doodle.

and the shading seems like you could use a marquee tool and low opacity paint bucket tool a few times to do the trick
