Description Langa is a prince of a pride on the other side of the desert. This pride is defined by golden pelts, pale eyes, and light shades of mane. At first, Langa seems to be the perfect heir, with his golden coat and silvery eyes, but when his tail tuft grows in everyone is horrified by the color. It's black. Such a color is unheard of in their pride, and the queen is immediately accused of having an affair by the Royal Council, though she had not. She argues that Langa looks like her mate more than her, but the argument is dismissed. She and Langa are banished.

All Langa knew growing up was hardship and loneliness. They attempt to cross the desert when he is a teen, and his mother, selflessly gives her son all food and water. She does not live to see the end of the sand. Langa barely makes it out of the desert himself, and he would have died too if not for a few lionesses led by a golden male with a red mane and a brown male with a darker mane happening by him.

When Langa regained consciousness the lion introduced himself as Kion, king of the Night Pride at the Tree of Life. He traveling to the Pridelands to attend his father's funeral. A golden lioness with blue eyes introduced herself as Princess Amara, and she was going to stop in a different kingdom between here and the Pridelands to visit her own parents. She offered to take Langa with her to the Grasslands since he didn't seem strong enough to go all the way to Pride Rock.

Kion agreed, and sent two of his lionesses with them.

In the Grasslands Langa was treated as he had never been treated before. He was accepted. He saw lions with dark manes and even dark pelts, and no one avoided them or treated them different. The King and the King-Consort both had dark manes, darker than his birth pride would had allowed.

The King-Consort, Cas, was especially welcoming and warm, very motherly. It made him miss his mother and wish he had realized sooner what had been happening to her. He would have made her eat and drink. Cas, however, told him that his mother had done what she did to ensure her son would have the strength to escape the desert, that he would live, even if it meant she would not. His mother had done what any loving mother would, put his life before her own. He cried into the dual-gender's fur, all his guilt, his flashes of anger at his mother for leaving him alone, and all his loneliness, and Cas held him, letting him cry.

When his crying had finally ended Langa rested and regained strength, but once he had he wanted to do something. He wanted to be useful to these kind lions that had taken him in without hesitation. So he followed Cas and his daughter Noyta, who was Langa's age, and learned about hunting and healing. He started joining in Nyota's lessons with Akida. Healing was so interesting, more than hunting he thought.

For his part, Akida was pleased at having another student. The cheetah had always thought the work of a shaman was a bit much to put on one animal. Langa was eager to learn and hung on every lesson.

As they grew from teens to young adults, Langa and Nyota became aware of their changing feelings for one another, and once his mane had finished coming in, Langa asked the princess to marry him. She happily accepted.
