Description
This is technically my first work of College art!Yeah I know its lame, but you have to start with the basics!
....I swear, the concept behind a good composition is baffling.
The teacher promises us we'll be able to see the lines and shapes that make a true composition great... but I haven't caught on to it yet... which is frustrating..
Regardless, I kind of like these...
My favorite is the first, but my professors favorite is the last.
hmmm
So which one do you guys like the best? 1 or 3
(Just so you know 2 is out of the question for the final design since it wastes so much space)
jeez, I feel sort of self conscious now because the professor pointed out that all my compositions are diagonal and have dark arches to control the other shapes...
eh...
And yes, this was made with sharpies... so the curves are far from perfect xD

If the teacher will let you modify them, I'd add more, subtle details to the empty space in the second one rather than going with 1 or 3. (...any teacher who thinks you can 'waste space' is a little crazy, if you ask me. It's not just what you do with your space, but what you don't do. 2 is a lot more attractive looking than the others...)
1 looks a bit like a tunnel. There are a few extraneous shapes that lead the eye away from that impression though, which I'm guessing is not ideal...
3 would look better if the bottom bit was truncated slightly and there was more space at the top.
I'm getting the feeling your teach might be more about meeting strict requirements laid out in some book than finding compositions that actually look good... If there's a compositional trick that works (and the arches do ) Then there's no reason not to use them if the occasion arises.

Hmm...
I totally understand each of your points! : O
In the end I chose to modify the first one because it was the easiest to change around.
(I might have to post it)
Ah not really, to be honest he has his own preferences when it comes to great compositions and he dislikes textbooks. Regardless the bias, he knows his stuff!
He explained quite logically that the black marks were perhaps too powerful and controlling. And when I revised them, I managed to keep the same feeling, with thinner lines!
Thank you for your feedback!
Sorry for the late reply too!

Ha, it's ok
I've learned a bit more about composition since I made that comment, and I can sorta see where the teacher was coming from...

Ah I see..
Yeah also he looks at it from a graphic design perspective... more with how the eye moves around the composition, etc.
He did remark that 2 was a very lovely design, he just said it wasn't a strong composition xD

I like all of them! But between 1 and 3 only... oh, I can't even choose. They're so different, it's hard to compare them. 1 is very angular, like a modern art piece you'd see in a business building and 3 is like an abstract painting you'd see in fancy ladies' rooms. Ya know, the ones that look more like a sitting room than a bathroom? Uh. Based on my personal taste, I think I like 3 better. But 1 is also very dynamic; It's a good composition as well.
It's not BAD that you use similar compositions. I guess it kind of gives all your work unity. Maybe it's just your style? It's kind of funny though, i've never noticed the pattern XD

Thanks!
I completely agree with you!
I know those paintings!
Personally I liked 1 better too, so that's what I decided to choose!
(3 had some potential though! )
I guess! I noticed how I leaned towards triangles and "street lamp"shapes throughout my projects! ...I guess I just like those shapes?
(Late late response)

Late responses are okay too XD I forget to reply to stuff for weeks at a time as well /sobusy
Yeah, I think I'd probably do the opposite. I tend to lean towards organic curves. I'm doing this art nouveau piece right now and my stencils for the borders are crazy curvy XDDDD

I actually liked 2 the most, but if you liked 1 the most, that is what you should stick with. You'll do better if you like it more!

Oh, I see. Hmm, well earlier I said I liked 2 and 3 the most, but again, I think you should go with 1.
